15 - 18 May 2014 : Re-Union in Plymouth

Posted by Elaine Yeung, Wednesday, 18th December 2013 @ 10:57pm

  • All FBUA-UFBA members will be welcome to join us.

The Re-union will based in Plymouth this year with visits to Exeter and the Eden Project in Cornwall. In 2011 we were based in Le Havre. Both cities were so extensively damaged in World War 2 so that substantial re-planning was required - In Le Havre by Auguste Perret, who was also responsible for much of the architecture, and in Plymouth by Patrick Abercrombie and other architects. Members will be able to judge the relative successes for themselves.

There is a huge naval tradition in Plymouth and the gala dinner will be held in HMS Drake, the Royal Navy's land based headquarters.

In Exeter we shall be visiting the beautiful cathedral and the Guildhall, one of the earliest surviving. We shall also visit the Award winning new Forum Building (Wilkinson Eyre) at the University and Castle Drogo (Edwin Lutyens) where we shall see the largest restoration project ever undertaken by the National Trust.

Events will conclude on the Sunday with a chance to further explore Plymouth and have lunch at the newly refurbished Theatre Royal.

Joint Committee - London, 14 - 15 March 2014

  • The following events will be open to FBUA/UFBA members:

    Friday
Following the Joint Committee Meeting, there will be a talk by FBUA member James Dunnett on the architect Erno Goldfinger at the AA. Goldfinger was Hungarian but trained in Paris and worked alongside Le Corbusier and others in the 1920s. He married an English heiress and moved to London where he did his most famous work. James is a well known architectural writer and has often written for the Architectural Review. He is a past Chair of DOCOMOMO-uk. He worked in Goldfinger's office and has often given talks on Goldfinger and is currently writing a book on him.

The talk will be followed by dinner either at the AA or nearby.

    Saturday
In the morning, we will be visiting Canary Wharf. We shall be able to look inside the workings of Crossrail and the new Canary Wharf Crossrail Station which are under construction. Numbers will be restricted and safety equipment will have to be worn. We shall also be visiting the Canary Wharf tower with an update on future plans for the area.

A lunch will follow at a local restaurant.
