The club is part of Capoeira Club London, which is run by Contramestre Hiram and his students.
Capoeira is a martial art that was created by African slaves in Brazil as a means to defend themselves from their oppressors. In order to mask the fact that they were practicing a martial art, the slaves had to make it look like a dance which is why capoeira is unique in the way it incorporates rhythm and music into its fighting form. We practice all three styles of capoeira: angola, benguela and regional, but incorporate our own unique style in the art.
The UCL group started 9 years ago and most of our members are beginners anyway. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their age, physical fitness, background and experience. Capoeira is a great way to stay in shape, as well as increase your flexibility and even learn music, Portuguese and be immersed in Brazilian culture.
