Week 6 Meeting - Cheese Night

E-mail sent by William Dutton, Saturday, 26th May 2012 @ 1:31pm

Good-afternoon TrekFans,

This week get ready for those terrible chat-up lines and cringy moments! Whether it be Paris trying his lines once again unsuccessfully, a bit of bloodfever knocking around, the world's worst special effects or Data simply "just not getting it".

Leave us your cheesy favourites for everyone to enjoy with the usual replicated refreshments!

See the Facebook event here and suggest episodes - the more the better!:

Meet as usual at 7:45pm for an 8pm start at Oriel college.

There is also likely to be a pub social this coming week for anyone who is interested before this event for anyone who is interested which a separate email will be sent for.

Thanks and hope to see you all there!

Fifth Week: Under-appreciated Episodes

E-mail sent by William Dutton, Saturday, 19th May 2012 @ 11:51am

Good afternoon Trek fans,

This week it is your chance to watch that episode that you really appreciated but nobody ever seems to talk about, or perhaps one that gem of an episode never has really fit with any of the themes that we suggest.

Leave episode suggestions in the Facebook event:

As usual meeting at Oriel college at 7:45pm for an 8pm start and as usual there will be refreshments available.

See you there,

Weekly Meeting 4th Week - Bridge Crew

E-mail sent by William Dutton, Saturday, 12th May 2012 @ 1:35pm

Hello Trekfans,

Firstly I welcome the new committee following last weeks ellections:

Captain/President: Louise Peterken

First Officer/Treasurer: Joe Hermaszewski

Communications Officer/Secretary: William Dutton

Congratulations to making the positions! However are they as well trained and qualified as they seem? Lets see if they can do better than the bridge crew in Star Trek! This week suggest episodes where the bridge crew are pushed to the limit and everything seems to go wrong.

Come to TrekSoc this Monday evening at Oriel College at 7:45 for an 8:00pm start and as always refreshments will be provided.

Facebook event:

Hope to see you there,

Trinity Termcard

E-mail sent by Louise Peterken, Thursday, 10th May 2012 @ 1:08pm

 Good afternoon Star Trek fans!

Attached is the termcard for the rest of Trinity. The socials are not yet set in stone and will be discussed at the next few meetings.

If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to email me.

Star Trek: London - date confirmed

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Saturday, 5th May 2012 @ 3:50pm

Hi TrekFans,

Thank you to everyone who got back to me regarding their preferred date for visiting the Star Trek: London convention. The voting is now closed, and I can tell you that TrekSoc will be attending on Saturday 20th October.

The point of deciding this early was so that people can get on and book tickets before they sell out. Tickets can be bought through this site - and there are a couple of points to note...
- You have to buy an entrance ticket before you can purchase any other kind of ticket (photo/show/autograph). It isn't currently very clear if the entrance ticket entitles you to anything except entry to the building, and if it's anything like the Peterborough convention we considered that will be all it allows. Talks etc will cost extra.
- So far the site is only selling entry tickets, packages, and Captain photo shoots, but it will add more guests and more types of ticket as we get closer to the dates. Keep an eye on the site for updates; the website currently says it will add the next group on Wednesday 9th May.

We've set up a facebook event page so people can discuss the tickets they're considering and what they've bought etc - check it out, and let us know what you've chosen! If you're not on facebook but would like to know what's been said on the page you can email a committee member.

And don't forget the elections on Monday!

Captain Lucy

Weekly Meeting (07/05) - ELECTIONS and Movie Night

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Friday, 4th May 2012 @ 2:49pm

Afternoon TrekFans,

The time has come for an extra special meeting - this Monday we bring you our annual elections, and an absolute Trek classic to follow, 'The Wrath of Khan'. There will be popcorn galore as we sit back and enjoy what for many will be their favourite Trek film, so come along to Oriel College lodge at 7:45pm for an 8pm start.

TrekSoc needs a new committee, and we're asking you to consider taking on one of the three fun roles available to keep our society going at Peak Efficiency! I'm sure all current committee members would agree that holding these positions has been an enjoyable, low-pressure way to gain some experience of responsability and other skills, and we are now offering you the opportunity to benefit from the same. Please have a read through the position descriptions below, and if you think you might be suited to one or more of them make sure you attend Monday's meeting. Candidates will be asked to give a brief speech, and will then participate in a short question-answer session before the vote. As ever it's a friendly atmosphere, so don't be nervous, and please do get in touch if you have any questions...

Specific Roles: Creating the termcard, running meetings, holding overall responsability
As the creator of the termcard the Captain has the opportunity to put together members' requests with their own ideas for socials and themes to create something exciting and worthy of regular attendance. They also take charge of meetings, giving relevant notices and making sure the episode selection and viewing goes smoothly and doesn't run on too late. Perhaps most importantly, the Captain must take responsability for the society as a whole, ensuring all the arrangements have been made to facilitate our meetings and dealing with any issues that arise, with the help of the other committee members.

First Officer/Treasurer
Specific Roles: Collecting membership fees, keeping the accounts and buying refreshments
The First Officer ensures that our society's termcards and socials are financially sustainable, carefully keeping good records of our accounts and deciding how much can be spent on refreshments and other materials without bankrupting us. They also collect membership fees and keep tabs on when guests without life-time memberships will need to renew.

Communications Officer/Secretary
Specific Roles: Writing the weekly emails, updating the watched episodes wiki, creating Facebook events
Our Communications Officer keeps our members informed, using GroupSpaces and Facebook to send out the details of weekly meetings and any other notices that need to be passed around.

None of these roles require a great time committment, and I hope there is something above that suits your interests. If so, come along to Monday's meeting and put yourself forward! The newly elected committee will gradually take on these roles over the rest of term with the support and advice of the current committee members, ready to hit the ground running when we meet the new intake of freshers and visiting students next year.

See you soon,

Captain Lucy

 Good day Trek Fans!

We are embarking on a new era within our society - the advent of Stash.

Things are now being finalised, and I can confirm that t-shirts (design attached) will amount to £7.50. For those who have alreaady said you want one, please email me your size (S, M, L etc.) so I can get everything right. This can be done either by emailing me or messaging me on Facebook.

If anyone else wants one, and hasn't gotten around to saying anything yet, this is your last chance to do so! Even if you're not actively coming to TrekSoc, we can get things pidged/posted/carried by owls.

If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to email.

Star Trek: London

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Tuesday, 1st May 2012 @ 3:35pm

Afternoon TrekFans,

Apologies for the extra email this week, but it's time for a vote on convention dates (Fri 19th October - Sun 21st)

At the meeting yesterday it was agreed that Friday was unsuitable because students may have lectures and tutorials, but we didn't come to a consensus over whether to go on the Saturday or Sunday. As a result we're rolling out a vote via email and facebook - EITHER email me back with your preference, OR vote in the poll on our facebook page.

I'll count up the votes and announce the result in Friday's weekly email, at which point we can get started on booking tickets!

Weekly Meeting (30/04) - Best of the Baddies

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Sunday, 29th April 2012 @ 1:54pm

Afternoon TrekFans!

This week we're opting for a broad theme to really showcase some of our favourite Trek; everyone loves a good bad guy, and we're asking you to suggest the episodes that show your favourites at their best. Anything from Borg to Xindi, Romulans to...Harry Mudd - if you can remember the episodes that stood out for you, we want to hear about them. Please post your suggestions on our facebook event page (go on, we know you have some), and if you think we might have watched one of your choices in the last year check out our 'list of watched episodes' which can be found under the wiki tab of our the groupspaces website.

We will also be deciding which date we intend to go to the Star Trek London convention out of the three available (19-21st October) so that people can start booking tickets before they sell out - if you want to have a say in which day we go either come along to the meeting for the vote, or send me a message with your preferences

And finally, don't forget about the upcoming elections! We're looking for a new Captain (President), First Officer (Treasurer), and Communications Officer (secretary), so if you want to be part of the next generation check out the term card for position details and join us tomorrow to find out more from the people currently in these roles.

So, see you tomorrow by Oriel College lodge at 7:45pm.

Weekly Meeting (23/04) - Barclay Night

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Friday, 20th April 2012 @ 7:29pm

Evening TrekFans!

After what I hope was a relaxing holiday we're kicking off the new term with the much-requested Barclay night! We'll be following our favourite holo-adict and hypochondriac from the early days aboard the Enterprise-D through to his appearances on Voyager, so give us your favourite episode titles on our facebook event page.

We also have the new termcard for Trinity, and you'll see we're coming up to Election time. It's time for the current committee to hand over the reins to the next generation, and we'll be looking for a Captain (president), First Officer (treasurer) and Communications Officer (secretary) - check out the termcard for details, and come along to the meeting to hear more from this year's committee about what is involved before our elections in 3rd week (or send me an email if you have any questions).

This term we're relocating, and our first meeting will be held in Oriel College. Meet us by the lodge at 7:45 for an 8pm start, and don't forget to suggest some episodes!

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Friday, 24th February 2012 @ 5:17pm

Afternoon TrekFans,

For our last episode-filled meeting of term we're bringing in a new theme, 'Breaking the Rules'. Whether its the Captain, an Ensign or the whole crew, sometimes regulations go out the window and we'll be watching our favourite characters getting up to no good. From mutinies to disobeying orders, and regulation breaches to misjudged subversion, give us your episode suggestions on our facebook event page and we'll put them to a vote on the night.

Weekly Meeting (20/02) - College Dinner and Movie Night

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Wednesday, 15th February 2012 @ 11:56am

Morning TrekFans,

This week you're getting a super early email because it's time to sign up for this year's first TrekSoc College Dinner!

Before our regular night on Monday we'll be meeting up at St Catherine's College (a slight deviation from the termcard for the observent among you) from 6:50-8pm to enjoy a served three course meal. It's known by students and tutors alike to be one of the best halls in Oxford without the ceremony of many colleges - no gowns required, casual dress code, and only two words of latin (if you can hear them).

The menu is as follows:

Starter: Humus salad with Pitta Bread
Main: Turkey Escollop with Curried Tomato Sauce
or (Vegetarian) Mushroom and Spinach Potato Stroganoff
Dessert: Dorset Plum and Apple Pudding

The cost for all this is a staggering £4.37 (you'll need to bring the correct change on the day), so if you like the sound of this email me back by Sunday evening to book a place, letting me know if you would like the vegetarian option and whether or not you have any dietary requirements. This will be a great opportunity to get together and enjoy a nice meal while ticking off a college on your list of places to try so do join us!

Our social will be followed by a movie night back at Hertford College; if you aren't stuffed enough already we'll be bringing out the popcorn for a Trek favourite, 'The Voyage Home'. This film really has it all; a massive log that wants to talk to whales, nuclear wessels, *that* punk on a bus scene - what more could you ask for?

The regular meeting will have a late start so if you can't make the meal and want to watch the film you'll find us outside the lodge at Hertford College at 8:30pm.

See you there!

Captain Lucy

Greetings TrekFans,

With Valentine's only a day away we're presenting you with a classic theme to get you in the mood - Trek love and romance! We're talking marriages, flings, star-crossed lovers...if you can think of an episode featuring some some of those gooey feelings (and we know you can) suggest it on our facebook event page. We'll also be discussing arrangements for our next social, dinner at St Catherine's College, along with the convention so come along for an update!

As ever you'll find us by the lodge outside Hertford College at 7:45 for an 8pm start.

See you there!

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Friday, 3rd February 2012 @ 8:02pm

Evenin' TrekFans,

This week we're bringing you the next installment in this year's effort to watch the introductory episodes of the five Trek series: Deep Space Nine's 'The Emissary' Parts I and II! It'll be a walk down memory lane for DS9 buffs and a solution to all the 'Why are they on a space station/what is this worm hole/Bajor??' questions newbies to the series have, so come on down for this smashing two-parter.

Join us by the lodge at Hertford College at 7:45 for an 8pm start.

Weekly Meeting (30/01) - On to the Holodeck & Pub social

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Friday, 27th January 2012 @ 12:09pm

Afternoon TrekFans,

This week sees the return of our popular social from last term - a trip to the pub before our regular meeting! We're heading back to the Turf Tavern (round the corner from Hertford college - if you get lost call me on 07702779307) to enjoy a drink or two and their wonderful menu, and we hope to see you there! Everyone is welcome, so if you haven't ventured out to join us before why not come along and meet everyone?

After the social we'll head out to Hertford College to enjoy this week's episode theme: 'On to the Holodeck'. It's a Trek creation we'd all love to own, and its time to watch the characters from The Next Gen. onwards get trapped on recreated planets or explore the latest programme. Please leave your episode suggestions on the facebook event page so we can bring them along to the meeting for the vote.

Join us at the Turf Tavern at 6:30pm, or outside the lodge at Hertford College at 7:45pm for an 8pm start.

Join us for a celebration of our favourite Ferengi, and leave your episode suggestions on our facebook event page for a vote.

Weekly Meeting (16/01) - Star Trek: The Drinking Games AND Termcard

E-mail sent by Lucy E, Thursday, 12th January 2012 @ 5:58pm

Evening TrekFans,

First off, Happy New Year to all our members!

We're planning another busy term and if you'd like a peek at our termcard you'll find it attached to this email. It includes the next installment in our 'Introductory episodes' mission, themes as suggested by our members, a college dinner, a movie night, a pub trip and much much more. (Don't forget that if you'd like a say in what goes on the termcard you can attend our termly meetings in eighth week or send us your suggestions).

On Monday we'll be starting the term with easily our most frequently requested theme: a drinking games night. As usual we want your episode suggestions, and this time we want suggestions for some rules so that on the night we can vote for three...and get drinking! You can choose pretty much any episode from any series - just post on our facebook event page.

This is a BYOB event with the society providing mixers and snacks. If you don't drink it isn't a problem - why not be creative and bring an alternative? And as at the start of every term we'd like to encourage anyone who has been receiving this email but who hasn't actually attended yet to come along and check us out; this should be a really fun evening and we're always open to new members (plus the first three meetings are free!)

So join us at 7:45pm outside Hertford College lodge for an 8pm start.

Captain Lucy
