Geek Quiz!

E-mail sent by Linda Jane Canton, Tuesday, 16th February 2016 @ 6:40pm

Hello everyone,

This is your reminder for this term’s Geek Quiz!
It’ll be happening at 8pm this Thursday (the 18th) in the Dorfman Centre of St Peter’s College - NOT the Magdalen theatre like last term. Don't go to Magdalen.

Maps of St Peter’s location and layout are available here: http://www.spc.ox.ac.uk/about/getting-st-peters/maps

I’ll be outside the lodge from about 7:45pm to make sure no one gets lost on the way to the room. As far as I know a bod card is needed to get into the college, so make sure you have yours with you – especially if you’re going to be late! If you forget your card/ get lost and can't find us, feel free to contact me and I’ll help as best I can.

A reminder for those of us who are bringing rounds:

1. You can score your round as you like, but no team may score more than 10 points on a round, to prevent a single round having an undue influence on the scores. Feel free to have more than 10 opportunities to score points, but be aware that scores are capped. Also, half-points are okay, but no other fractions.

2. Rounds must not be based around a single fandom i.e. no rounds based entirely on Doctor Who, or entirely on Star Wars, or entirely on programming languages (this did actually happen once, and is why we made the rule in the first place)

Additionally, Whosoc is asking for people to include a visual component for the rounds if possible (like a print out, or powerpoint slides with the questions) as there will be at least one deaf attendee. Rounds which are based on identifying sounds or music are still allowed. A laptop will be provided, and to my knowledge speakers will be as well.

Hope to see you all then!

Week 4: Alternate Timelines

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 8th February 2016 @ 3:31am

Hello Everyone!!

I hope you've all had a fantastic week!

Firstly I'd like to say congratulations to Linda for being elected to the new position on the comittee as Morale Officer. She will be handling social events/fun activities/stash (I believe) in future so expect some cheery emails from her as well as my somnambulous ravings!

Secondly, we are meeting once again at St. John's outside the Lodge at quarter to 8.

Thirdly, for 5th week, our Technical Officer is taking a leave of absence and so we will be in need of a laptop which has an HDMI output in order to play episodes that week. If anyone has this please could you let me know if you are willing to bring it along that week (there may be some points towards the role of technical officer in the coming Trinity term elections!)

Otherwise, I hope your 4th week is fruitful and so I shall see you all tomorrow! (Later)

Check out the theme section below for info regarding that!

Week 3: Holodeck Misadventures/Morale Officer Election

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Sunday, 31st January 2016 @ 12:41pm

Hey there everyone!

It's week 3 (already?!) and it appears Phantom is making me lose my sanity as for some reason this is being written on a Sunday afternoon.

This week, as mentioned previously, is the election week for the new role of Morale officer, a post that will last until Trinity 2017 (as it's being introduced out of sync with the other comittee positions). We'll be doing elections at the start of tomorrow's meeting which will be at St. John's at the usual time (although not usual for this term) of 7:45; meeting outside of St. Johns lodge.

I hope you've all had a fab week and I'm looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Week 2: The best-laid schemes...

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 25th January 2016 @ 12:19am

Hello everyone!

I hope you've all had a good week. I have one notice to give about the new comittee position of Morale Officer and also this weeks theme in the sections below!

Additionally this weeks meeting is also later due to a malfunction in the U.S.S St John's T.V room and so the DVD room is engaged until later to accomodate the University Challenge programme.

So this week we will be meeting at 8:25 outside St John's lodge on Monday

So I'll see you all tomorrow!

Due to an unexpected anomaly in the DVD Room sector, tonight's rendez-vous will need to be delayed by half an hour.

Instead we shall be meeting tonight at 8:15 outside of St. Johns!

That's 8:15 tonight outside St. Johns, sorry for the late notice!

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 18th January 2016 @ 8:19am

It's first week and I have already exceeded myself with the lateness of this email but a wonderful welcome back to everyone!

The first meeting of the term is TONIGHT AT 7:45 OUTSIDE ST JOHN'S!

I'm really looking forward to this term and seeing everyone again! See you all tonight. Apologies for the brevity of the email, I promise next week's will be longer!

Week 8: First (and for some, last) Contact

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 30th November 2015 @ 2:59am

Hello everyone! I am going to keep it short this week.

It is 8th week at last and the poll has decided, we are going to be watching Star Trek VIII: First Contact in our end of term meeting!

This week we will be meeting at PEMBROKE COLLEGE to make use of the wonderful Pichette Auditorium to watch the film.

Meeting outside Pembroke lodge at 7:45 tonight (Monday)

Additionally, there is to be an end of term meal at Atomic Burger this Wednesday. The restaurant is comic book themed and is quite a bit down Cowley Road. I am told it is amazing there; only told because even though it is a Trek Soc tradition to go in week 8, somehow I have never been able to make it after an entire year. This too seems to be becoming a tradition as yet again I am unable to make it however it would seem a lot of people can and should be a really fun night *sob*.

Further details on the meal are to follow but could everyone who can make Wednesday please say so on the Facebook poll so I know how many places to book!

Sadly for some of our members this will be the last meeting; while it will be sad to say goodbye it has been wonderful having you all around with us this term. I hope it has been an equally enjoyable one for you!

All the best and LLAP

Week 7: Penultimatum

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 23rd November 2015 @ 12:11am

Hello everyone!

Hope you have all had a fabulous week, stunningly, it is 7th already!!

Our meeting this week will be the last one at St. John's this term before the film night at Pembroke in 8th!

We will be meeting at the usual time (7:45pm) to go in for 8:00pm outside the front gate!

Hope you have all seen and filled in the multiple questionnaires on the Facebook page regarding hall swap and the 8th Week meal. It's looking like Wednesday is the best for both of those dates. If anyone can get us in on to their hall this Wednesday at short notice please email me! I shall book the table at Atomic Burger for Wednesday.

Otherwise, hope to see you all tomorrow!

Week 6: The Art of Diplomacy

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 16th November 2015 @ 12:20am

Hello Everyone!

First off, thanks to everyone who came to the Geek Quiz last Thursday! We had a MASSIVE turnout which was brilliant! Thank you to Nathan, Sjoerd, Maaike and Kat for providing rounds for our whopping 3 teams (more people than any other society!) After that quiz we had one team with a podium finish in 3rd and now I am starting to wonder whether or not 3 is this society's lucky number... (there is a further story behind this, turn up at the meeting to hear more!)

We are meeting as usual at St John's on Monday (by this I mean today; I'm writing this a late o'clock again) at 7:45 outside the porter's lodge.

See you all there!

Week:4 A Very Trekky Hallowe'en/ Scary Monsters and Jumpsuit Tights

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Sunday, 1st November 2015 @ 2:28pm

Hello Again everyone!

I hope you have all had a great Hallowe'en! It's been another ridiculous week so apologies for the lateness!

I'm going to have to keep this short unfortunately as I am pushed for time but I have a few notices to read out at the next meeting about Geek Quiz and a couple of other things which I think will certainly make it's way onto next week's email so don't worry if you can't make it this week!

Week 3: SHUT UP WESLEY

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 26th October 2015 @ 4:03am

Hello there everyone!

This is your Captain coming at you, for the second time this term, from silly o' clock!

First off, thank you to everyone who came along to the Back To The Future event last Wednesday, it was a great night and I'm sure everyone who attended will agree with me!

This week's meeting will be back at St. John's; meeting at 7:45 outside the main gate!

Be warned that this week I will be turning up a little late to the meeting (shock and horror (not my choice, honestly)) but I have left the startup in the capable hands of Alastair; many thanks number 1!

In other news, I have managed to get the auditorium at Pembroke College booked for Week 8 so we can have a proper cinema experience for the end of term film!

Now, moving swiftly onto the theme....

Hello there again you lovely people!

This week we shall be returning to the (rather excellent) DVD room at St. John's College, meeting outside the college's front entrance on St. Giles street at the same time of
7:45-8:00pm!

Before I go on to explain this week's theme, I just want to begin with a couple of reminders for those wanting to go to the Royal Albert Hall on November 1st and the Back to the Future Party next Wednesday!

Week 1: First Contact/ A very warm welcome! [St. John's at 7:45]

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 12th October 2015 @ 2:41am

Hello everyone!

I would like to start with a huge welcome and thank-you to all who signed up to The Oxford Star Trek Society this week! Additional thanks to Alastair, Becky and Oscar who were helping me by being the welcoming faces of the society on the stand!

A massive 101 of you signed up and so it lies to me to describe this week's first meeting and general layout of the society. I must apologise for the delay in getting this email out; it has been a super-busy week for me and it is only at this small hour I am able to send this out after adding all of you to the mailing list!

8th Week: Farewell for 2014/15 (SPACE WHALES)

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Sunday, 14th June 2015 @ 11:39pm

Hello Trekkers!

It’s 8th week at last and the end of a great year with Trek Soc! We’ve had a great year with loads of good times, not to mention the double win in the Geek Quiz! This week we are finishing off with a showing of Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home as a nice way to round off the term! Come along to Pembroke at 7:45-8pm on Monday to chill out; reflect on the year, and probably listen to me regale you with details of my inevitably woeful first day of prelims!

Thanks to everyone who managed to make it to the meal last week in Pembroke Hall, it was a pleasure having you all here and it was an awesome evening of fun and terrible verbal articulation!

Sadly, however this may be the last meeting with some members ( :( )  and I will be sorry to see them go but to all the others I look forward to seeing you next year with (hopefully) a load of new freshers! Please do stop by at the freshers fair if you can and say hi to whoever is on the stand!

All the best for the summer and our best wishes to all those leaving us!

Week 7: "Heard you were Talkin' Shat"

E-mail sent by Callum Spiller, Monday, 8th June 2015 @ 12:51am

Hey there Trekkers!

It’s 7th week and the end of term is nearly upon us! This week the theme is celebrating the best (and worst) performances of William Shatner! Throughout The Original Series Shatner has provided some of the most scintillating performances, however the quality of which can perhaps sometimes be taken to task. Nevertheless he never fails to impress by the manner in which he displays the nature of his character’s predicaments! Suggestions will be taken for episodes which feature the most memorable of Shatner’s on-screen antics! Poll will be listed on Facebook for suggestions. Come along to Pembroke College on Monday at 7:45-8pm to find out which episodes are chosen!

As a reminder, the meal at Pembroke is on Tuesday meeting outside the college at 6:50pm not forgetting gowns, £7.30 for payment and optional bottle of wine! Look forward to seeing everyone there.
In other news which some of you may find interesting, this week Oscar and I got sent an email from a producer of BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast show which read something like this:

Hi Callum,
I’m a producer on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Radio 2.
We’re looking for someone to talk about Star Trek on tomorrow morning’s show.
Please call me on (mobile number) asap and I’ll tell you more.

As it turns out, they were looking for someone to talk about the philosophical aspects of Star Trek on the radio, unfortunately, when I called them up they had foolishly decided to cancel the idea so there was no radio appearance! I just thought I would share with you all to show how TrekSoc is actually recognised and appreciated as a source on Science fiction knowledge… that and it’s pretty cool to think someone on Radio 2 thought to look us up as a prominent voice for Star Trek!

A final reminder; those who wish to come to the concert in November please please PLEASE bring your money to the meeting on Monday or on Tuesday so I can get seats booked for everyone, will be an awesome trip, we already have a few takers so the more the merrier!
