2nd Week - Weird, Wacky & Wonderful

E-mail sent by Member 205b955, Saturday, 14th October 2017 @ 1:40am

Hi Everyone!

I hope you've had a fab 1st week (for those of you not running on Student Time®, that's 8th-14th October), and that everyone's settling back in well. It was really great to see so many new faces last week - hopefully we haven't scared you off and we'll see a few now-slightly-less-new faces this Monday. If you didn't manage to make it last week, don't despair, you're still so so welcome!

Oxford (especially TrekSoc) is full of weird, wacky and wonderful people - let's try and set that in context (or not as the case may be) by watching episodes with the wackiest aliens in the known universe. Please do jump onto the FB group and nominate/vote for something along this theme (or just turn up and be surprised). We'll also be watching an episode of Discovery (ep.5), and with their track record so far, we're sure to see something wacky in that too.

We're meeting outside St John's College porter's lodge this Monday (16th) at 7:45pm :)
Hope to see you there!

LLAP,
Captain Le Croissette

Venue Correction

E-mail sent by Member 205b955, Monday, 9th October 2017 @ 12:08pm

Hi everyone!

Sorry for the really late notice, but the venue for tonight has changed to Teddy Hall (https://goo.gl/maps/9oAEBLoPrAq). We'll meet outside the porter's lodge there at 7:45pm. Don't worry if you don't get this in time - someone will be hanging around outside Somerville until around 8:00pm to catch any stragglers!

Hope to see you there :D

1st Week - First Contact

E-mail sent by Member 205b955, Saturday, 7th October 2017 @ 5:56pm

Hi Everyone!

First of all a very warm welcome to all of our Fresher's Fair signups - we had an incredible amount of interest and it was great to meet you all! Most of our organisation is done on a Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/8731153518/) so do feel free to join that, but I'll be sending out weekly emails with venues/details for those who don't want to.

Rest assured though, whether you're the most die-hard trekkie or you've never seen an episode before and just signed up because of the fluffy things on the Fresher's stall, you're totally welcome to join us!

Hope to meet many of you soon!

8th Week - Film Night

E-mail sent by Member 205b955, Saturday, 10th June 2017 @ 4:39pm

Hi everyone,

It's that time again - the TrekSoc you've all been waiting for...

Film night!

This is always a controversial showing so be sure to suggest and vote for your favourite films or two-parters!

Good luck to all who have exams and can't make it to our final meeting of term - for the rest of us meet at 7:45 outside St John's as usual :)

LLAP,
First Officer Griffiths

7th Week - How can you be deaf with ears like that?

E-mail sent by Member 205b955, Saturday, 3rd June 2017 @ 5:48pm

Hi all,

Pale skin, sensitive to noise, high caffeine tolerance - finalists and Vulcans have a lot in common! Sadly, or perhaps happily, few Star Trek episodes focus on students taking their terminal exams. Fortunately, however, there are plenty that feature everyone's favourite green-blooded, anatomically-confused race of logicians (who promise that they do in fact have feelings).

Vulcans appear in 401 episodes of Star Trek, so as the Mathematicians/CompSci people will tell you, that's 80200 possible evenings that we could have. While that's not quite "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations," it's close enough for plenty of excitement. So, get on the Facebook group, nominate an episode featuring your favourite pointy-eared hobgoblin, and come along!

This week we'll be at St John's - as always we'll meet outside the lodge at 7:45.

I would be remiss not to end with this:

6th Week - Sun and Social Commentary

E-mail sent by Member 205b955, Saturday, 27th May 2017 @ 8:20pm

Hey all,

Over the past 50 years, Star Trek has been a consistent vehicle of social commentary, challenging people's views and presenting new perspectives on old issues. This week we're nominating episodes that have some element of this - it's quite an open theme, so go wild (and no, there's no (reasonable/acceptable) way to spin Spock's Brain as a social commentary). So get on the Facebook Group and vote/ nominate an episode (as always, leave a reason for your nomination in the comments below)!

This week we're back at St John's so we'll meet outside the lodge on St Giles at 19:45 for a 20:00 start.

Best of luck for all of you who have exams!
LLAP,
Captain Le Croissette
(also answers to: Croissant, Matt, Matt LeC, MLC or whatever sounds like my name or a pastry)

P.S. Drop me a message if you have any food requests :)

5th Week - "Lighthearted"

E-mail sent by Member 205b955, Saturday, 20th May 2017 @ 4:49pm

Hey everyone!

I hope you've had a good fourth week, and I'm sure over this next one you'll here a lot of people going on about fifth week blues. Whether you believe in them or not, having TrekSoc on a Monday gives us a chance to beat the fifth week blues, so we're going to set ourselves up for the week with the most lighthearted episodes that you can think of. Make us laugh, smile, or just raise an eyebrow in an amused fashion (even if it's only on the inside) - whatever's nominated, let's have some fun!

Also in aid of this, we'll be opening the food to suggestions - if there's anything that you think will help lift your spirits, drop me a message and I'll see what I can do.

This week we'll be meeting at Teddy Hall at 19:45 - see you there!

LLAP,
Captain Le Croissette

4th Week - "What was all the fuss about?"

E-mail sent by Member 205b955, Sunday, 14th May 2017 @ 2:15pm

Hey everyone!

For any of you who didn't manage to make it to the elections last week, the 2017/2018 committee has been elected as below:

Captain - Matthew Le Croissette
First Officer - Lizzy Griffiths
Morale Officer - Sophia Vaughan
Technical Officer - Will Seymour

We're really excited that you've chosen us to help organise the society over the next year, and we have some exiting things planned so keep you eyes/sensors peeled. We also just wanted to thank the previous committee (now all various flavours of Admiral it seems) for the fantastic job they've done this last year.

The theme for this week is "What was all the fuss about?" featuring the most outstandingly incompetent, least threatening, or generally worst antagonists. It seems that for every Khan there's a slightly malicious band of space hippies, so please do get onto the Facebook group and nominate/vote for those episodes with villains that are bad for all the wrong reasons!

Tomorrow's meeting will be at St John's, so we'll be meeting outside the lodge at 7:45pm as usual.

See you there,
Captain Le Croissette

Week 3 - The Election!

E-mail sent by Member 1ed41b6, Sunday, 7th May 2017 @ 11:41am

Hailing all crewmembers!

Monday's theme will be "Strong Leadership"...it's the end of an era for the current committee and time to elect a new one! The positions are: Captain (responsible for rooms, events, budget, general society planning), First Officer (assists Captain in those things), Technical Officer (responsible for the society hard drive and TV set up) and the Morale Officer (helps to plan events etc.).

We'll kick off the meeting with a short hustings and then a secret vote. After the new committee is elected, we'll have two episodes as usual - so get voting on the Facebook poll :)

Meeting: Monday 7.45pm, outside the Somerville porters' lodge.

It's been so much fun to be your Captain and I look forward to the next generation of Star Fleet officers!
