Thames Valley Scale Model Club

Format of TVSMC Meetings

We had an inquiry about the format of the clubs meetings.  Here is an edited version of our reply:

We look forward to welcoming you to the TVSMC.  Meetings starts from 19.30, but it is flexible, as the evening is pretty much free format.

If you let us know you are coming, we will look out for you and guide you around.

As to the format of the evening, it is pretty much free format, with most of the evening spent walking around Liston hall  conversing with old friends and new.  You will see the members buzzing around the models laid out on the tables according to the clubs competition classes (details on the website, Competition Classes tab,  but please just talk to us).

There is also an area for models in progress - I often bring along model I need advice on, and members circulate around the tables talking, offering words of wisdom and encouragement - this is the main part of the evening, being able to share modelling experiences and expertise.  I was like you - coming back into modelling after a 35 year break, and the help from various club members has been free flowing and invaluable.

There is a table for any magazines/books/spare model parts which members have donated - just browse them at your leisure during the evening, or take some home.

Some members also bring along excess stock from their model stashes for sale.

Tea/Coffee is served from around 8pm.   Competition slips are filled in by the members during the evening, judging the models entered into that months competition.  The competition is just a fun way of showing what you have created, you can take it as seriously as you want, or just for enjoyment.  It is entirely up to you whether you enter anything at all, or even bring any models along.  We have some members who turn up with new models every month, other who come to every meeting, but only bring along a new model once in 12/18 months.

The November/December meetings are slightly different in format from the January to October meetings.   In November, the only models in competition are those that have won their class in one of the previous 10 months .  The members then vote on which are the best in each class for the whole year, as well as best overall etc.   In December, we have the prize giving for the year, as well as a Christmas social when we bring along some Christmas treats ( mince pies/sausage rolls etc). Partners are welcome.  In December we do have two stand alone competitions,;

  • the Christmas plate -  in 2017 the theme is anything 'RED', any scale, any subject, as long as it  has a  'RED' theme.   we expect to  see lots of Red Arrows Gnat's and Hawks turning up, maybe some Soviet Aircraft, as well as a few Ferrari's,
  • the Edgar Brooks Spitfire trophy - for the best Spitfire at the evening ( any Scale).

If you  would like any more information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best Regards,

Thames Valley Scale Model Club
