The Junior section of the club was formed in 1979 with 12 members and 2 volunteer helpers and today it is thriving and welcomes youngsters with varying levels of ability and from every background. The Junior section has grown to a membership of circa 300 with a team of 42 volunteers supporting it (and is still growing).
The club prides itself on promoting a supportive, family environment where young people feel welcomed and are encouraged to enjoy athletics. The club will help athletes improve their skills to meet their potential, irrespective of their ability level and will expect them to compete for the club if selected, or as individuals in the different competitions the club is involved in.
In 2004 the club achieved the prestigious Sport England Clubmark accreditation.
The club's aim is to give members, from the time they start, basic instruction in all athletic disciplines i.e run, throw and jump and to encourage them to attain a general level of fitness. The athletes and coaches all enjoy a multi disciplined coaching approach to athletics throughout the year in preparation for appropriate competition. As the youngsters mature they gradually may start to specialise in specific events and the club coaches endeavour to make sure they get the best training available to help them develop at their own pace and improve their performances and personal achievements.
The Junior Section meet on Tuesday (Track and Field) and Thursday (Track, Field and Endurance by invitation) at the Jubilee track at Stratford School Track, Alcester Road and they also use the Sports Hall in the winter.
The club provides opportunities for young people from the age of 8-9 to receive appropriate coaching and competition and the Junior Section is affiliated to the following organisations:
Heart of England League. Division 1 for both Boys and Girls
Warwickshire Sportshall League
West Midland Young Athletes Cross Country League.
All coaching is by UKA qualified coaches who are trained and have been screened for their suitability for working with young people (see the club's Welfare policy below).
The coaching team is constantly evolving with a policy of "growing" and training our own coaches primarily drawn from our young athletes and parents.
We really value parental support and we welcome (and need) parents to get involved with the running of the club. Parents are involved in many various capacities apart from coaching, such as officials at competitions, as a volunteer helper, administration etc (see the Junior Membership application form for details) and parents/carers are invited to come along and meet the age group coaching leader, club members etc to see what we do, how we do it and find out more about the club.
All the coaching team work hard with the athletes to ensure the youngsters achieve their potential and in recent years considerable success has been achieved in both League, county, regional and national events, winning medals at ESAA and national championships.
Numerous athletes have represented South Warwickshire schools, Warwickshire (county and England Schools), the Midlands and England Schools. Ryan James, Rory Dwyer and Andrew Pozzi have represented GB juniors and Andrew competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
