The Nest—Center for Women, Children and Families is a local, nonprofit organization that promotes healing, stability and well-being of children and families. They do this through four programs: Child Care, Crisis Care, Self-Help Parenting and Domestic Violence Counseling. They need readers to spend 15 minutes with the children in their child care. You can bring your favorite childhood book, read it to their students and donate it. Or, they will supply you with a book if you are able to come in and read. Be a Story Time Hero, come read and encourage children to develop a love for words and stories that will help them learn throughout life.
Will you make time in your busy schedule for them? Most of the children to whom they offer care and education come from families who are in crisis. They offer their families respite (free) care while they attend school, look for a job or attend to other family business that will eventually lead to improved stability and well-being for the family. By sharing your time with these children, you will be providing them with a positive role model as a Story Time Hero.
Consider volunteering with the Partnership for Successful Schools. In a nutshell, volunteers are assigned a student in grades 1-3 and meet with that student once a week for 40 minutes. Tutors may read to/with their student or play reading games. Booker T Washington, which is not far from campus, is one of the sites that needs volunteers. The contact person at the organization is Carolyn Jones email@example.com.
