The weather was perfect for our Saxon Shore League match with Nonington at The Park. Unfortunately Sibton were 3 bowlers short of their normal attack and this proved to be their undoing.
Sibton started with a bang despite Harry Wren chipping one to square leg early on. The score rattled on to 48 off 6 overs but wickets then began to fall regularly. Miles Clayton held things together well until he was fourth out for 30 with the score on 95. Dougie Wood, Ben Brenchley and Seth Rice played a few good shots which got the total up to a respectable 120 for 9 at the end of 20 overs but how we could have done with another 15 runs!
When they batted Nonington survived a couple of dropped chances and their openers gradually began to impose themselves, adding 97 for the first wicket. The innings never got away from us, which was a good effort in the circumstances, but we did not really put the batsmen under enough pressure to win the game. Nonington passed our total with 10 balls to spare and 8 wickets remaining.
This was a good effort against the odds. The fielding lacked composure at times which is something we need to work on. We now cannot win the league outright but, if the results fall in our favour, we may still end up joint top. So we need to win our last league game against Hythe on 23/7.
