What a cracking start to the season, apart from the weather which was cloudy, blustery and cold.
A new look/line up Bromley team, with an overseas not 4 hours off the plane, were inserted on a green looking pitch.
Straight away bowling strike partners Steven Rowe and Mikey James had Bromley in trouble, as Bromley were in trouble at 35 for 6. Bromley new recruit Chris Walker held things together and dug in for a good 49 and later on Nicky Bluet with 32, but wickets continued to tumble when Walker was out as Bromley finally relented and were bowled out for 163. Steven Rowe picked up 4 wickets for 24 runs off 11.34 overs, Mike James 3 for 37, 1 wicket for Jake Benfield and 2 wickets for Craig Buckham.
A good all round performance in the field but again highlights the difference in the other divisions to Premier in that at Prem from 35 for 6 sides still get a score whereas in the lower Divisions a team would perhaps be 50 all out.
In reply, on a fast drying and now white looking pitch, the Sibton batters looked steady but Bromleys overseas Wayne Morgan bowled well and removed AA and soon after Tim Bishop as a wobble was on at 17 for 2. Dan Reed at the other end also bowled well but without any luck. As Steve Hickmott went for 17 the score was at 48 for 3 with 15 overs gone. After a brief shower, Jamie Keeler struck a good 44 to take the score to 103 for 4 in the 31st over. However Jamie was ably assisted by Ben Allon who played very well and along side Jake Benfield steered Sibton home in the 42nd over finishing on 58 not out and Jake with 23 not out.
A truly momentous victory and very pleasing. What a great start.
Meanwhile the 2's had a tricky trip to Linden Park. A good start for the boys saw Linden Park get to 130 off 43 overs. Fine bowling from youngster Ryan Meers (these names keep cropping up!) had been limiting the Linden batsmen. However, the rain interceded and the game had to be abandoned, unfortunately - so 8 points each.
Tougher tests next week as the 1s travel to champions Hartley and the 2s, also, entertain Hartley freshly down from the Premier 2nd XI - Watch this space, I bet no one gave us a chance against Bromley!
