The Under 15s had their first match of the 2013 season – a cup game against Folkestone – at the Park on Wednesday 8th May. The weather was breezy and cool and the pitch had been freshened up by some rain in the morning.
Given these conditions it was no surprise that batting proved difficult. Seth Rice bowled one of the Folkestone openers with the first ball of the season (a beauty!) and this set the tone. Sibton’s bowlers kept the pressure on with Jack Woodward, Miles Clayton and Rufus Cottrell performing particularly well. Folkestone never got going and when Josh Woodgate-White ran their top scorer out with a brilliant direct hit from square with the wicket the writing was on the wall. They subsided to 56 all out after 15.2 of their 20 overs.
The Sibton innings was a similar story. Some fine shots were played early on, notably by Miles Clayton and Harry Wren, but the only batsman to make it to double figures was Ben Brenchley who stuck around well and made 19. Wickets fell regularly to a lively and accurate Folkestone attack but Sibton were always favourites to win. They duly did so at the end of the 15th over with 7 wickets down.
This was a good win against a competitive side. The bowling and fielding was very impressive for the first match of the season. Congratulations to all involved. The Saxon Shore League starts next Tuesday with a home game against Hawkinge. Let’s keep up the good work!
