SAFPA would like to announce that voting is now open on all available Board of Director (BOD) positions and will run from 2 May - 15 May 2015.
Please take a moment to read the comments provided by or for each nominee then select one person for each position.
Capt Stephen Vela - I have been a part of SAFPA since I was the President of the Student Society while in IPAP. I have continued that service as The DAL for Communication and most recently as The DAL for Membership. Under my term we have increased our membership by more than 10%. I am in this for the long haul and I promise to continue to fight for PA rights with AAPA and through AAPA, with Congress. I represented SAFPA at the AAPA Leadership Submit and have ideas to take SAFPA to the next level. I would be honored to be the next President of SAFPA.
1Lt Lisa Paulson - I earned my undergraduate degree in Communications with emphasis on public speaking and interpersonal communication. As a recent graduate in 2004, I worked for my local government in a public relations role that incorporated my idea for a monthly topical newsletter to all residents of our 300,000 plus community that is still in print today. I had the honor of being president of my student society for AAPA at Bethel University, where I earned my MSPAS. During my time there, I also was selected as an alternate for the student HOD, being able to participate as a teller for the 2013 Conference in Washington DC. I am passionate about our profession as physician assistants and would like to use my talents and training in communication to grow SAFPA and increase interest in the promotion of our field. Thank you for your consideration.
Maj Bryan Johnson - I am at a point in my career where I want to make an impact in SAFPA and our profession. I realize how important membership in SAFPA is in maintaining AAPA House of Delegates seats. I will make retention of current SAFPA members a priority while also focusing on creating new members by bringing in IPAP and HPSP graduates. Thank you for your consideration.
Maj Lloyd Scharfenstine - In my time as an Air Force PA I have seen SAFPA grow from just a small group to a much larger one. I have attended several SAFPA conferences, now PA refresher courses, and made many new friends. Having this membership SAFPA and AAPA has allowed us not only great CME opportunities and great networking but also helped us maintain a voice through our AAPA HOD. I would like to have the opportunity to get more involved in expanding our growth within the active duty Air Force as well as the AFRES/ANG and civilian community. Please consider my nomination as a DAL for Membership.
Capt Brandy Sande - I'd like to nominate myself for this; I have already begun to build a membership database to better maintain and recruit members. Additionally I'd like to seek the opportunity to research medical newsletters, CME opportunities that are free or inexpensive for our members. Lastly, I am a very friendly and outgoing person and believe that strangers are just friends I haven't met (corny but true), so I think I'd be perfect in this position. Thank you for your time, and have a good day!
1Lt Sammy Leos - I would like to nominate myself for DAL for membership. I have been involved in AAPA, NM Association of PA's, Oklahoma Society of PA's over the past few years as a student and now as a practicing PA. I understand the importance of professional advocacy in order to protect the rights and privileges we enjoy currently in our practice as well as the need to continue to protect our interests in the future. Maintaining and growing participation in SAFPA strengthens our voice with lawmakers and is critical at this time when many laws and regulations at the state level continue to threaten our scope of practice. If elected I will work to increase membership, participation, awareness, and work with other SAFPA board of directors to strengthen this organization. Thank you for your consideration.
Maj Kevin Kupferer - I would like to self nominate for the Director at Large for Activities - I have extensive experience in coordinating large conference events and have the technical expertise to manage SAFPA CME requirements.
Capt Rodney Ho - My name is Rodney Alan Ho Jr and I am running for DAL of Activities. I am orginally raised in Hawaii on the island of Oahu and enjoy hanging out with friends and BBQing. I was stationed on Kadena AB and know will be moving to Fort Sam Houston working in the Triservice Research Lab. I know that I am a perfect fit for this position because of my passion for education and believe that as PAs we are exposed to effective and worthwhile continuing education topics/presentations. I have experience with orchestrating CME events at my previous base. As the CME program director for the 18th Medical group, I managed to attain 25 CME credits for medical providers and saved the Air Force $52 K in TDY costs. I truely believe to better our profession we must continue to strive for personal and professional excellence which includes continuing medical education and activities. If you vote for me, I will ensure that you become a part of my passion, to better yourself as a person, professional and lastly a PA.
Capt Melanie Johnson - I would be honored to be a member of the BOD for SAFPA. I've been a PA for four years and I've attended 4 SAFPA conferences. I believe my experience and contacts in the medical field will be beneficial for planning a very successful conference. In addition, I am located in the San Antonio area and have a flexible schedule Which will allow me ample time for all the duties this position entails. Thank you for your consideration.
Capt Eric Salinas - I intend to represent SAFPA through the same integrity, service and excellence that we all strive for in our daily lives as Airmen. As a specialty PA, I bring a slightly different perspective regarding the PA profession although my roots in general medicine remain strong. I also have the unique advantage of being based in San Antonio, which gives me leverage to accomplish tasks efficiently and plan one heck of a PA refresher course in 2016. Although the duties of DAL of activities are new to me, I look forward to increasing awareness of SAFPA membership cultivating CME opportunity and contributing to the needs of SAFPA as it continues to grow.
Capt Phil Karsen - I nominate Capt Phil Karsen for the position of secretary/treasurer. He has distinguished himself as a leader throughout his career. He has served in a similar position for another large organization in the past and would bring that experience along with him. Also he would serve as a great resource moving forward as we continue to strive to reach out to both IPAP and HPSP grads. Now having been in the military for a few years he remembers his transition from HPSP into the military and can bring ideas on how SAFPA can reach out and help other/future graduates. He will be a great choice and resource.
House of Delegates:
Maj Karina Glover - I have been a part of the SAFPA BOD in the past as DAL Membership and as HOD. I would like the opportunity to apply for the HOD position for another term. Previously as HOD, I was stationed in Japan and missed my opportunity to sit in at AAPA and vote and represent SAFPA on important issues. I am now CONUS and I would really like the opportunity to represent our group, as an Active Duty member and at the end of this term as a retiree member of SAFPA. I read all of the AAPA publications and stay abreast of the hot topics. I plan to keep everyone updated, get peoples thoughts and represent our group on pressing issues in the AAPA conferences. Thank you.
Mr. Charles Frost - Experienced retired AF PA with teaching position in MPA program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Experience as clinician and educator, and advocate for expansion of the PA role in medicine. I will advocate for my colleagues unequivocally.
Election results will be posted on 16 May 2015 @ 1200.
