Presentation by Richard Hall and Kay Leather
On 19 January 2006, the New Horizons spacecraft was launched
on a mission to the edge of the Solar System. Now, after an almost
ten-year journey, it is conducting a five-month-long reconnaissance
flyby study of Pluto and its moons. Pluto's closest approach is
scheduled for 14 July 2015. The spacecraft will then travel further
out into the Kuiper Belt to examine some of the ancient, icy miniworlds
that lie more than a billion kilometres beyond the orbit of
Neptune. Richard and Kay will take you on a journey of the
imagination to this frozen realm. After the meeting, with a telescope
and weather permitting, we will identify Pluto.
