7:35pm VARIABLE STAR presentation by Richard Hall
New Zealand’s Albert Jones, who passed away in September, has been described as the greatest variable star of observer of all time. In addition to his variable star work, which amounts to more than half a million observations, Albert discovered two comets and the brilliant Supernova 1987A. What was the importance of this work? Why observe variable stars? The observation of variable stars and the analysis of their light-curves has unravelled the physical nature of different types of star, which in a telescope, appear nothing more than a point of light. In this presentation we take a look at Albert’s work and some of the amazing things that can be discovered by observing variable stars.
8:30pm CHARLES DARWIN & THE TREE OF LIFE presentation by Edwin Rodley
Is there life out there? First we have to understand life down here. In this presentation we take a look at the ‘History of Evolution’ and life on Earth. The presentation includes the excellent documentary: ‘Evolution and the Tree of Life’.
