7:35pm ANCIENT GREEK ASTRONOMY
Presentation by George Moutzouris
The Greek contribution to astronomy was not so much in observation as it was in applying logical thinking and geometry to these observations. That is how Greek mathematicians figured out that the earth was spherical and went around the sun, calculated the size of the earth, understood eclipses and eclipse cycles and developed the first valid idea of the scale of the universe. This presentation is about those ancient Greek astronomers/mathematicians and their great contributions to our knowledge of the heavens and, to the world we know today.
8:30pm THE EVOLUTION OF AMATEUR ASTRONOMY IN NEW ZEALAND
1973-2013 Presentation by Ian Cooper
Ian is one of New Zealand’s leading amateur astronomers and, in the opinion of many, our best visual observer. Ian’s talk covers the four decades that he has been active in astronomy.
