7:05     The Swords of Damocles

Beyond the major planets, in a zone of never-ending darkness, are billions of minor bodies.   These tiny worlds, which form the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud, are the debris left over from the formation of the Solar System.  From these dark and frozen realms come the mysterious and sometimes glorious comets.  Historically comets have been seen as harbingers of doom.  But, they may also be the bringers of life.  Comets, their nature and mythology, and the important role thy have played in the evolution of life on Earth, are the topics of this presentation.  This will include the latest images and information on the recent comets that have graced our sky.

Presentation by Richard Hall and Ian Cooper

7:55     Supper

8:10     THE PLANETS: (1) Different Worlds
‘Different Worlds’ is the first of an 8 part documentary series on the planets, featuring unseen space race archive film and testimony from leading scientists.  This BBC production is said to be the most comprehensive and spectacular account of space exploration and discovery ever made.
