 orers will travel to the Utah desert for a simulated mission to Mars. Pair
 ing onsite research and exploration with a coordinated outreach and educat
 ion program back in New Zealand\, students  \nand educators will be able t
 o follow and interact with the crew as they undertake this exciting expedi
 tion.\n\nMars Desert Research Station (MDRS) is a unique facility\, a self
 -contained “habitat” located in the middle of the Utah desert in the USA\,
  that provides a stunning Mars-like environment. A project of the Mars Soc
 iety\,  \nthe site and protocols replicate constraints like: isolation\, t
 ime-delayed and limited communication\, food rations\, hostile atmosphere 
 (crews wear space suits when they leave the habitat). The facility is used
  for  \ntraining by research institutions such as NASA and the European Sp
 ace Agency.\n\nKiwiMars is the 118th crew to have been selected for the MD
 RS programme since the station was established ten years ago.
