Oxford Vegans: Oxford Vegan Festival!!!!!

E-mail sent by Rich Sleight, Thursday, 2nd February 2017 @ 7:16pm

Hi All
I hope you are well.
Oxford Vegan Festival - 25th March 2017
I know, right. An actual vegan festival in Oxford!

The OXFORD VEGAN FESTIVAL is coming to the KASSAM STADIUM on SUNDAY 25TH MARCH 2017. Organised by the wonderful Farplace Animal Rescue. Check out the website - https://www.oxfordveganfestival.com/ You can volunteer, or have a stall there, or just attend - the festival is open from 10.30am-5pm and is cheap as vegetable oil freid chips at £3 with kids coming free.

The Festival is organised by Farplace Animal Rescue - a UK animal rescue who help specialist cases like FIV+ cats and have helped many such cases in need from across the UK. They help animals from all over the UK and believe promoting veganism helps as many animals as direct rescue work. All the profits from the festival will directly help animals.

I dare say someone could organise a meetup.com event so everyone can go together.

Email list etc

I am no longer living in Oxford although I do tend to come back regularly and I might even come to the festival above. I am now in amazing Bristol.

If someone wants to take on this group, making the odd event, sending out a random newsletter then please email richsleight [at]gmail.com Ben is officially the admin but I don't know where he is.

Otherwise please be aware that this email list is going to be a bit quiet. I'd recommend joining the meetup group or facebook group listed below.

This group/email list was primarily started as a student group, but is also open to anyone resident in Oxford.

Thank you and stay amazing :).

Oxford Vegans: Brrokes event, vegan interviewing, and future of group

E-mail sent by Rich Sleight, Monday, 26th October 2015 @ 3:26pm

Hi All
I hope you are well.

The group has received the following email about an event and an opportunity to be interviewed as a vegan.

Subject: A educational vegan event at Oxford Brookes University.

Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Jeffrey, I am a final year student and studying Hospitality Management at Oxford Brookes University. We are currently arranging a Vegan Event in 17 March 2016 at Oxford Brookes Restaurant http://restaurant.business.brookes.ac.uk/. We sincerely would like to invite vegan to an interview and take a short video in order to share about their veganism experience & lifestyle (such as the reasons why they became vegan; what had been changed after; what do they think about being vegan & may be some perspective about vegan trends in future). As our event aims to educate and inspire people to become a vegan. We would be truly appreciated if you could spread these words to people may be interested and the vegan group as well. There will be a lovely gift to be given from us for our each interviewee. We are looking forward to hearing from you. Here is my contact detail, please free feel to contact. Email: 12042237@brookes.ac.uk.

Best Wishes

Jeffrey

-----------------------------------------------------------------

If anyone would like to get involved with this email group please let me know.

This was primarily started as a student group, but also open to anyone resident in Oxford. There is a website and an email list of about 200 people. It is useful to update people about all things vegan in Oxford via a newsletter as well as organising events like a meal, trip out, talks or some activism.

I have now moved away from Oxford but realise that people are still signing up to this group. I am not the official manager but did end up organising a lot of events and writing newsletters.

If you are interested or have any ideas please let me know.

Thank you and stay wonderful everyone :).

Richard

Oxford Vegans: future of group

E-mail sent by Rich Sleight, Thursday, 13th August 2015 @ 10:41pm

Hi All
I hope you are well.

This is email is to ask if anyone would like to become the manager of this email group.

'Managing' the group could mean anything really, it would be up to you or a group of people, to decide what to do with the email list.
Examples are:
a) send around a monthly or quarterly newsletter listing items of interest or events.
b) organising a few events be they film screenings or socials or activist events.
c) merging the email list (around 200 poeple) with another group similar to the Oxford Vegans, for example Oxford Students For Animals group.

This was primarily started as a student group, but also open to anyone resident in Oxford.

I have now moved away from Oxford but realise that people are still signing up to this group. I am not the official manager but did end up organising a lot of events and writing newsletters. I feel it would be a shame to let the group go but if noone wants to manage/organise anything I feel the best thing to do will be to delete the group if possible or direct people to an alternative place to find information about being vegan in Oxford.

There is also the Oxford Vegans Facebook Page as well as the Oxford Vegetarians and Vegans Meetup.com group.

I hope the newsletter and events were helpful to people when the group was more active.

If you are interested or have any ideas please let me know.

Thank you

Richard

Any other ideas?

If anyone would like to organise events - film screenings, shared food meetings, picnics, film outings, animal sanctuary outings, information or food stalls around the city or any other ideas -  then please contact myself or just suggest on facebook or the meetup group (remembering to label it as a vegan event). Mulu the Pop-up Ethiopian Restaurant, this Saturday evening 14 December - possibly last one ever!

Mulu the Pop-up Ethiopian Restaurant is on this Saturday evening at the Magic Cafe in Cowley. It's a delicious all you can eat buffet for just £10 with authentic Ethiopian coffee and dancing afterwards. Extensive vegan options available - in fact most of the dishes are. Book tickets either by emailing mulu.info@gmail.com or calling David on 07792 527 421. ...........................................................................

Organisers for events wanted!

Jane who organised and set up the Meetup group for vegans and vegetarians in Oxford is unable to continue organising in 2014. Jane organised I think around 100 events including many amazing meals. Thank you very much Jane! If anyone would like to organise a meeting, be that drinks, a meal at a rstaurant, a games night, a potluck, a film, a trip out somewhere...then it is easy to suggest this on facebook, or the meetup website, or reply to this email.

There can be lots of help to advertie your idea. General guidance is to provide people with enough notice to fit it into their busy diaries! The Oxford vegan community is definitely becoming more active for students and non-students so let's keep it going :).

This group also of course links very well to the Oxford Students For Animals group, and the Oxford Brookes Vegan and Vegetarian Society (both found on facebook). There is also the http://www.oxfordanimalethics.com/ social group and institute, and http://www.vero.org.uk/ focused on animal research ethics.

Thank you, and for those of you having holidays - have some good times! For all those not on holiday - have a good time anyway!

THIRSTY MEEPLES GAMES CAFE Vegan Meetup next Monday 11/11/13 6pm onwardsy

A new games cafe Thirsty Meeples has been set up in Gloucester Green hoorah! It's the first of its kind in England. I randomly met with one of the Gamemasters and it sounds a lot of fun, they have over 1000 games! (His job is literally to play games all night-winner!) The owner John is going to provide us with vegan options if we can get a decent number of people going, as at the moment there is only one sandwich we can have :( and I want cake! So please reply quickly so I know if this is viable and I will confirm it with the cafe! (I'm starting at 6 but people could come a bit later). If you can reply on the meetup that's great but if you are not on there a post on here is grand too, Chloe x http://www.meetup.com/Oxford-Vegetarian-and-Vegan-Eat-Up-Meetup/events/149526012/

Welcome to the new admin!

E-mail sent by Nessa Carson, Sunday, 19th May 2013 @ 11:28am

Hi everyone!

Hope it’s all going well for you. I’d firstly like to welcome Oxford Vegans’s new admin, Ben Jarvis. You may know Ben from VERO and Oxford Students for Animals (OSFA). I’m sure he’ll do a great job of keeping Oxford’s only surviving vegan group going! Other than that, just a few notices:

The Vegan Society Shop

Remember you can get a 33% discount off anything at the Vegan Society Shop (even if you’re not a VS member) if you order through Nessa. Reply to this email and get your orders in by the end of the month!

Sponsorcraft for Students

Do any student members need to raise funds for projects during the uni year or in the summer?

Sponsorcraft is a crowdfunding platform for students to raise funds for their projects, ideas, and events. We've helped other students at Oxford Uni and Brookes, so wanted to see if we could help Oxford Vegans members too! You can view some of the Oxford Uni projects we've helped at: www.sponsorcraft.com/g/ousu

Yummy Burritos

Mission Burrito on King Edward St is celebrating National Vegetarian Week with a new Special Veggie Burrito. It’s vegan and contains courgettes, red pepper, pak choi and spring onions, stir fried with a touch of sesame oil, a dash of soya sauce, and a hint of chilli.

Sounds tasty! It will be on sale between 20th and 26th May, in addition to their other vegan options.

Crib or Playpen Hire?

A vegan family are visiting Oxford in July and were wondering whether it’s possible to hire a crib or pack ‘n’ play playpen around Oxford, or whether anyone from the group could lend them one. If you’re able to help, please email me and I’ll pass the message on!

Exciting Information and Events!

E-mail sent by Nessa Carson, Monday, 22nd April 2013 @ 2:44pm

Hi everyone!

A wealth of information and events in today's email... scroll through it all to see what you're interested in! Oxford Vegans obviously can't guarantee the authenticity of information on any external links; that's their business. :)

Some really important information to start off with: we are looking for someone new to manage the mailing list and organize events. I am moving to America in August to start my PhD, and while it's been great fun these last couple of years, that's too much of a commute! It really does not take a lot of time; you just need to be passionate about veganism and welcoming to others in the community or wishing to learn more about veganism. If you are a member of the national Vegan Society, it's also coming to the time for someone else to take over the job as Local Contact - this involves being the first port of call for local vegans or interested people to talk to, and occasionally forwarding emails to this mailing list. It's a great alternative interest for your CV (look how broad my interests are! I'm clearly a great leader and organizer! I'm looking at you, students), and actually a lot of fun. Although it occasionally forces you to do horrible things like go out to the pub and hang out with like-minded people. ;)

So that's how it goes. It really has been a lot of fun. I'll still be around till August, but I don't know how around I'll be with this thesis! Anybody who's interested, and perhaps if you'd like to share the job with a couple of other people, just email me back on methionine57 [at] gmail.com. No commitment just yet.

See you soon,
Nessa

Room wanted in a vegan house

Forwarded message:

My Name is Daniel and I am a 25 year old Swiss vegan. I got accepted into Oxford University (PPE) and can start studying in the coming October (if I'll find the money 'till then). Even though the College is offering some places to live for first year students, I'd prefer living outside the College with other people. But as I am right now in Honduras working as a human right's defender, it is not that easy to find a room in Oxford. So I thought the best way would be to ask some like-minded people; if by chance you know someone who is renting a room starting September or October, I'd love to get in contact with them. I know it would be an off chance but maybe I'm lucky.

If you can help Daniel out, please reply to me at methionine57@gmail.com.

Protest the badger cull

Dear animal lovers!

We, a group of concerned wildlife enthusiasts from London are organising a National March Against the Badger Cull and would like to invite your group to join us. Our group is called London Against the Badger Cull.

We are calling for a National March as the Government continues to ignore science and public opinion. The campaign against the cull is gathering momentum and many people want to show the government that they oppose the cull.

We are asking people to meet at 12pm on Saturday 1st June in Victoria Tower Gardens, Central London, SW1P 3JA. We will be marching to the Defra offices. This will bring maximum impact as we stand in opposition to the cull. Government will be able to see how many of the public oppose the cull. We’re hoping this will also bring a lot of media attention. We will bring public attention to the undemocratic and unscientific nature of the cull. The March will end with a rally and speakers. We are still waiting to hear from the Police as to the exact route of the march.

Given the strength of public opinion on this matter we are hoping to make this event as big as possible and that’s where you come in! We would very much appreciate your support, so why not make some banners and placards and come along with your group to show the government you oppose the cull and help raise awareness of the plight of badgers in cull zones. It will also be a good opportunity to meet and network with fellow badgerists, wildlife enthusiasts and animal lovers. Maybe paint your face like a badger or wear a home-made badger mask. We are asking people to wear black and white to support legal direct action against the cull.

Lots of people are working very hard in the campaign against this deeply flawed cull and it is a pleasure to be working alongside an enthusiastic and dedicated team. We sincerely hope to see you on the 1st June at 12pm. Standing proudly for the badgers.

Oxford Food Co-Op

The Oxford Food Co-Op is a newly-formed Oxford University group that aims to make ethical food accessible and affordable for students.

It was established by and for people who care about where their food comes from…

…who refuse to accept that a student budget necessarily means a weekly shop to the local chain supermarket…

…who want to change the way we think about food consumption for good.

Anyone who is interested is invited to check out their website, Facebook page or blog!

Regular Quiz Team and Brighton Vegfest

E-mail sent by Rich Sleight, Sunday, 24th February 2013 @ 2:11pm

Hi All

The Gardeners Arms pub quiz is every Sunday and the Oxford Vegans have a regular team on the first Sunday of every month. Turn up at 7.30pm to eat food, and 8.30pm for the quiz, or anytime actually just to say hi! The Quiz Master is always on form with a special theme each week.

The Gardeners Arms is a veggie and vegan pub in Jericho.

Here is a link to the google map to find it http://g.co/maps/99btm

Someone will have an Oxford Vegans sign on a table. If you don't see one then you are the first one there! Please ask the bar staff for paper and pen and make a sign :). There are 8 people signed up for this event already. Last month we had 12 people and 2 teams and one team was successful in coming 3rd, in January we came 2nd. If we manage the prized top spot it can be vegan puddings all round!

Sign up on the meetup group below (this is shared with the Vegetarians and Vegans group), comment on facebook, or simply turn-up.
http://www.meetup.com/Oxford-Vegetarian-and-Vegan-Eat-Up-Meetup/events/101321572/

On the 16th and 17th March is the Brighton Vegfest, not to be missed! - http://brighton.vegfest.co.uk/index.php I expect several of us will be going there either by car or train for one of the days or even both! Brighton is a great place for Vegans and the festival consists of talks about animal rights and welfare, the environment, lots of stalls, chances to try new foods, cookery demonstrations and more. London Vegans usually have at least 40 people as well!

March 16th - OxGrow, Oxford's Community allotments are holding a Big Dig day, which is also happening all over the country. Read more about it here - http://oxgrow.org/2013/02/18/the-big-dig-march-16th/ Not all food will be vegan, but a lot of it will be. The focus is on growing food locally, and knowing more about where your food comes from. This is not a 'vegan' event, however many people see education about food and growing your own food as connected in many ways to animal welfare/rights, environment, and personal health.

Many thanks
Rich

Happy 2013 Oxford Vegans! Upcoming Events and help needed!

E-mail sent by Rich Sleight, Saturday, 19th January 2013 @ 2:20pm

Dear All

As the Oxford Students for Animals are holding Committee elections on Tuesday I think quite a few people may want to attend this - https://www.facebook.com/events/320492238069194/

Not many people have expressed an interest to become involved in helping organise things for this group so maybe we delay this meeting a little bit, it was scheduled for the same day as the above event, Tuesday.

Please comment in the forum discussion started on this website.

http://groupspaces.com/OxfordVegans/forum/?bview=thread&thread_id=44712

Also if anyone would like to become one of the Managers of the Groupspaces website and/or the facebook page then please let me  or Nessa know, or we could even start a blog if someone wanted to. Design ideas, or just passing on information to others is very helpful.
............................................................
So...what should we do for 2013? What events should we organise or go to? Shall we do more socials, games nights, quizzes? Should we organise stalls, or talks, or film nights? Shall we have a new website? Shall we do restaurant reviews, who would like to? Who would like to get involved more this year? We are the official Oxford wing of the Vegan Society and they have various campaigns, activities, and discounts I believe for official societies that we can ask about.

Thank you

Happy 2013 Oxford Vegans! Upcoming Events and help needed!

E-mail sent by Rich Sleight, Sunday, 13th January 2013 @ 12:37am

Dear All

Happy New Year to everyone! The good news for the new year is that we have a steadily growing number of members, and also a regular and well attended event every first Sunday of every month at the Gardeners Arms Quiz. We started off 2013 in great style by coming second in the first quiz of the year, and eating the rewards of our almost victory!

Oxford Vegans needs more people to suggest what they want 'Oxford Vegans' to be. Can people meet on the evening of January 22nd to discuss what we will do in 2013 as a group (location in central Oxford to be confirmed). If this date is not convenient then it can be changed.

There is now a forum discussion started on this website for you to add your ideas and whether you would like to go.

This has also been added to the facebook group.

Hi Everyone

A few people are planning on going to the
West Midlands Vegan Festival - Saturday 27th October.  There is now an event page on the meetup group (
http://meetu.ps/nx1ZP) so if people want to travel there together they can sign up and organise. I set a time to meet at the train station in Oxford, but please comment if you want to go together but at a different time.

It is easy to join the meetup group and a very useful website to organise events and know who and how many will attend events.

Animal advocacy groups at Oxford: introductory film evening Tuesday 16 Oct

E-mail sent by Nessa Carson, Monday, 15th October 2012 @ 11:54pm

Hey everyone,

Sorry to the new members from Oxford Uni freshers' fair, who will have received two emails from us tonight!

VERO (Voice for Ethical Research at Oxford) and Oxford Student Vegetarian Society have organized this film and social night **TOMORROW**, Tuesday 16th October. Sorry about the short notice this time in getting the message out; entirely my fault! It is a free event, and there will be noms.

"Whether you're interested in campaigning actively on animal issues, attending talks and discussions or simply meeting likeminded people and finding out more about the options available to vegetarians/vegans in Oxford, our joint introductory evening is the ideal place to start! Meet at 7.15 pm for drinks and snacks, followed by the film at around 7.45 pm.

If you can't make the film but are interested in getting involved, please do get in touch.

We look forward to meeting you..."

INTRODUCTORY EVENING: screening of the award-winning documentary film Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home
Seminar Room East, Mansfield College. 7.15 pm
Admission free. Refreshments included.
Organised jointly by Oxford University animal protection groups. A chance to meet us over drinks and snacks and see this much acclaimed and very moving film, recently released on DVD.

"Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home explores the powerful struggle of conscience experienced by several people from traditional farming backgrounds who come to question the basic assumptions of their way of life. A riveting story of transformation and healing, the film portrays the farmers’ sometimes amazing connections with the animals under their care, while also providing insight into the complex web of social, psychological and economic forces that have led to their inner conflict.

Interwoven with the farmers’ stories is the dramatic animal rescue work of a newly-trained humane police officer whose sense of justice puts her at odds with the law she is charged to uphold. With strikingly honest interviews and rare footage demonstrating the emotional lives and intense family bonds of animals most often viewed as living commodities, this groundbreaking documentary shatters stereotypical notions of farmers, farm life, and perhaps most surprisingly, farm animals themselves."

Hopefully some of you will still be able to make this, despite my late notice. If not, don't worry, we and the other two societies will have more events soon.

Nessa
