*** TUESDAY 14th October, 8pm ***
The Moser Lecture Theatre, Wadham College.
This week's Poverty Basic is a debate on the value of International Aid. We are very lucky to have two excellent speakers in Alistair Fraser (Oxford University) and Max Lawson (Oxfam – Senior Policy Adviser).
Alistair Fraser is a graduate student in Politics and International Relations. His research focuses on the relationship between Africa and the West, in particular how donor governments and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) promote their preferred economic and social agendas, and particularly in African responses to these influences.
Max Lawson is a senior policy adviser at Oxfam GB, and also leads Oxfam International's policy work on Aid and development finance. He studied at the University of Sussex in the UK, and lived and worked for three years in South Africa and then in Malawi. He has worked for Oxfam since 2002, firstly in policy support to country programmes, and then in advocacy and campaigns. As part of his country support he has visited and worked with over 25 country programmes across the world. In his work for campaigns and advocacy, he has specialised in the World Bank and IMF, and also on the G8, and was heavily involved in the Make Poverty History campaign in 2005.
The debate will begin at 8pm, with each speaker getting the opportunity to state their opinion before the floor being opened to questions from the audience. The current exec will be there from 19:30, so feel free to come along and meet them for some charity chat! For those interested we will go to a pub afterwards for some drinks and then who knows where....
