Spain and France Cycling Trip

Saturday, 25th May 2019 at 8am - 6pm Sunday, 9th June

Location: TBC

Placeholder for the summer 2019 cycle ride - details to be firmed up. Ride will either be via ferry to the north coast of Spain, then riding back over the Pyrenees into France, then northbound to catch a cross channel ferry home or the opposite way around, starting with the cross channel ferry, heading south across France, over the Pyrenees and into Spain along the north coast and then take the ferry home. The ride is currently planned to be unsupported, so you will need to carry everything you need on the bike. B&Bs and the like will be planned for each night along the route.

sounds brilliant unless i succeed in getting much fitter I fear it would be a bridge - or a mountain pass too far

I'd agree with Peter's comment about the boat.. the sea was calm when we got it, but chatted to others that had also chucked up for 20+ hrs on a lumpy crossing. How about.. getting the train through the flat bits of France to e.g .Clermond Ferrand, riding towards Spain then back on the boat?

Looks good.
Building project may limit days i can go.
Would prefer boat down and cycle north of spain first.
Assume best book boat sooner rather than later?
No idea of cost as yet.

Hi Peter - point noted about the sea crossing. The other thing is for people like yourself to maybe join us for a few days, or a week of the trip?

I’d love to be doing this, but can’t do so much time away. One comment, after travelling on the 24 hour ferry to Santander a few years ago... we had a wonderful relaxing trip out, but on the way back the Bay of Biscay was foul and all four of us (and most of the rest of the boat) were throwing up for the entire journey. It was ok on the way home, but at the start of the trip it would have been truly awful. So unless everyone has great sea legs: fine, risk the long ferry, but don’t rely on feeling ready to ride the next day...
