The Mahoning Valley business community comes together to recognize those companies that receive safety awards issued by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, and the Mahoning Valley Safety Council Joan Kovach Safety Leadership Award.
The Joan Kovach Safety Leadership Award
The Mahoning Valley Safety Council issues a Safety Leadership Award in honor of Joan Kovach, who together with her husband of 29 years Michael J. Kovach, Jr., started, owned and operated the Youngstown-based company, City Machine Technologies, Inc. since 1985 but who died suddenly in a hiking accident on July 16, 2006.
The award is issued to Mahoning Valley Safety Council members who have taken the most effective steps towards improving the safety culture at their company during the previous year.
The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation issues annual Safety Awards for their safety records during each calendar year in one or more of four categories.
1) Achievement Awards: To each company decreasing its incident rate by 25% or more during the year.
2) Group Awards: To the company with the lowest incident rate in each employer category.
3) 100% Awards: To each company without any lost-time injury during the year.
4) Special Award: To each company that accumulates at least 500,000 hours and at least six months without a lost-time injury .
