Inspired by honing their expertise in “kid-watching” (Yetta Goodman, 1978), and learning to use the “formative assessments that give teachers power…” (Cris Tovani, 2012) such as conferring notes, annotating texts, student surveys, drafts of student writing, reading response journals, and quick -write notebooks—four Michigan teachers from Red Cedar Writing Project and Top of the Mitt Writing Project share the student data they use to identify and describe their successes and challenges in teaching reading and writing.
