It’s with some sadness that the Kalamunda Collective committee has to announce that this year’s main Kalamunda classic event will not be run in 2017.
Due to what appears to be a crackdown by the now Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DPaW) and the Department of Water (DoW), we have been unable to work out an acceptable route to all parties. The Kalamunda Classic has always been about raising funds for the Kalamunda trails by providing something different to what the riding community can normally ride every weekend. Whether it was racing on one of few old forgotten trails or down a usual climb (in reverse), it was aimed at being a fun and inclusive event.
Unfortunately racing/events on any unsanctioned trails is now off the table, and even racing sanctioned trails in reverse will not be approved due to erosion, water quality and safety concerns. We were also unsuccessful in simply re-using the same race legs that we used in the last or previous years events.
However the setting up and running of such a large event has significant costs, and the committee feels that with the route options allowed by DPaW and DoW it will simply not appeal to enough riders to even be viable. We were trying to link over to a significant potential sponsor in Kalamunda town, but again an agreed suitable route alignment could not be found.
The main Kalamunda Classic event over the years has raised several thousand dollars for ongoing trail maintenance, and this will be greatly missed from our fund raising. We are still endeavouring to try and obtain consent for an interesting “Sunday Funday” event later this year and if successful we will be announcing further details on this in the future.
We thank everyone for their support of this great event, and for your help in all the funds that were raised from it. We hope this is just a temporary situation and that we will be in a position to run this successful event again in the future.
