On April 24th, two Bakersfield doctors, Dan Erickson and Artin Massihi, help a press conference questioning the California's stay-at-home order.

Erickson and Massihi said their facilities have tested over 5,200 patients for the coronavirus throughout the county, making up for over half of all testing in Kern. According to their data, the death rate of the coronavirus is similar in prevalence to the flu.

"Now that we have the facts," said Dr. Erickson. "It's time to get back to work."

Erickson said he believes businesses could reopen and as testing continues, people could starting going back to work. In fact, Erickson suggests that staying at home too long could be even worse for people's health.

Then on April 27th 23ABC received an email from YouTube giving the station notification the video had been taken down, citing YouTube’s “community guidelines.” 23ABC has appealed the ruling through YouTube.

23ABC News also reached out to YouTube regarding the notification and a company spokesperson issued a statement saying the video was pulled because the content contradicted the guidance of the local health authority.

“We quickly remove flagged content that violate our Community Guidelines, including content that explicitly disputes the efficacy of local healthy authority recommended guidance on social distancing that may lead others to act against that guidance," said the statement. "However, content that provides sufficient educational, documentary, scientific or artistic (EDSA) context is allowed -- for example, news coverage of this interview with additional context. From the very beginning of the pandemic, we’ve had clear policies against COVID-19 misinformation and are committed to continue providing timely and helpful information at this critical time.”

The video went viral, reaching over 5.46 million views, and sparked debate over recommendations to lift the shelter-in-place order. Even catching the attention of of SPaceX CEO Elon Musk.

My family and I have been doing full time missionary work worldwide for over 28 years working in remote areas in the mountains serving small communities and indigenous people.

Since being back stateside I have been busy all winter cutting and splitting firewood for the elderly and a few families that the husband was recovering from major surgery and needed firewood for heating and cooking. Delivering food to a few families that have large families to feed and not enough food to make it through the week.

My heart is to serve as the Lord opens doors for me.

My family and I have returned from 28 years of full time missions work in the mountains of Central America. 

My SS monthly check is not sufficient to pay for rent and utilities and still have anything to buy the food for the month. I am praying for possibly being a caretaker for someone that has a second property that needs to be guarded. I had a large construction company years ago so keeping the property in good shape is something I can do.

My son and I can produce food in a Hydroponic system, either with pumps the conventional way or through a method called Still-water Hydroponics. This could be a good source of fresh produce that is completely Organic for your family and mine!

My heart is fully turned over to the Lord and if possible I would love to continue helping those in need as we did through this past winter...cutting and splitting wood for the elderly to keep them warm and delivering food to families that are struggling each week to feed their families. Mentoring to those that are hungry for the word. 

I will do what ever it takes to supply for my family, they are my first mission field so please call me so we can talk!

"INW(Prep) has done an excellent job of preparing its members to “survive this threat and to thrive in the process.†My thanks to all who have put time and effort into that. Yes, some have doubted as they saw news releases and “experts’ who claimed things were not what we were being told. Some things were not as we were being told, but the precautions advised and taken by those presenting at the February Meeting in Newport allowed us to live to face a future unscathed.

"It is time to move forward, plant our gardens, go back to work using the knowledge we have gained and Keep America Great."

Yes, we can all look back on that meeting as a major milestone in our area.  Not only the presenters, but the active participant attendees.  Above all, let's once again recognize and applaud Alan and Dr. Brenda Bramwell; she's the one who notified us upon first receiving the info from CDC on Jan 21of this year - far earlier than ANY other private or governmental entity warned us!  And WE are the group that have been proactive on this in the beginning, and WE are the group that has provided the greatest majority of CERT students and graduates, that Alan & Brenda volunteered to train.

Ranger and I are thankful and honored that we have been able to interact with thousands of folks, here in the INW and beyond for so many years.  We are so happy, when we do in-person, phone or radio "wellness checks" and so many say, "Yep, we're doing fine!"

Of course, speak up if you DO need something; you folks are GREAT!

I have a comm'l beekeeper who is keeping an eye out for out-yards for the June-Sept timeframe.  He'd be bringing 24 - 32 hives out for several months before trucking them out for pollination contracts.  I used to do a little of that stuff back when I had more backbone than now.  It's a great way for you to get some pollination done; he'd be looking for areas that are crazy with knapweed.  If you or neighbors use chemical sprays, please don't reply!  Also, obviously, need easy in-out, on-off of property.

We can start this, here at HoofHenHoney Organic Farm.  Here's How-

First, schedule with me!  Limited spaces are available.

Next,

Purchase one of the Honeybee nuc colonies available on Craigslist, FB, feed stores or whatever.  Bring that and 25 lbs of white table sugar to me.  You may buy more than one, but only one comes here; you would be responsible for setting up your others elsewhere, based upon what you learn with me on this one.

I will use my equipment to expand that nuc into a colony over the season, and you will work alongside me and learn.  You will apply what you learn here to the other colonies  - if any - you are growing out.  Anticipate a couple visits a month, on average, till the cold sets in.  This would likely be 6 months x 2 visits x 2 hours each, equalling approx 24 hours of personalized mentoring and training, for which I would keep the nuc that had been grown out with my equipment.

I would strongly suggest that you also enroll in any personal or online classes you may find, as well as interact with as many beekeepers as you can.  What I learned 44 years ago is equally true today: ask 10 beekeepers a question, and you'll get 11 different responses!

Anyone getting HONEYBEE NUCS this year?

Standby for a tip or two -

First off, a "nuc" (pronounced "Nuke") is a mini, or NUCleus hive - a queen, workers of all stages, larvae of all stages, and some capped honey & pollen.  Some folks try to sell 3 or 4 frame nucs, but 5 frames is what you need.  What used to be $15 when I started out 44 years ago is now 10 times as much nowadays.  Other ways to get bees are to buy a package of several pounds or, if you're lucky, to catch a swarm.  A swarm in May's worth a bale of hay, a swarm in June's worth a silver spoon, but a swarm in July ain't worth a fly.  Old saying.

Anyway, most of you know that I like to build things here at HoofHenHoney Organic Farm as if I'm making them for my Grandpa- cuz, before you know it, I AM.  That means smarter & lighter, incl raised beds and lighter honey equipment.

Standard deep supers can hold 120 lbs of honey.  My days of that ended decades ago.  I've switched over to Illinois (Dadant, 3/4) depth supers for everything - brood chambers & honey supers.  Cheaper to buy & stock one size, & easier on feet & back.

Problem is, nucs are sold in full-depth frames in deep nuc boxes.  So, I take a deep box, and secure a double-layer of two-by's on both the left & right insides.  That leaves about the right spacing to take up 2.5 frames on both L & R, leaving me room for the 5 frame nuc in the center.  I set that on my bottom board and stack Illinois depths above (I generally end up giving them 3 for their brood chamber).  Above that will go more of the same for honey supers.

Anyway, I thought you might want to know my method of converting a 5 frame deep nuc into a medium depth brood chamber.  Bees typically work from the bottom up, & from the inside out, so you'll have a chance to wean them out of the deep. 

What will help with that is, secure metal 1/8" hardware cloth across the bottom of that deep super.  It will allow bottom ventilation, allow any mites to fall through, and prevent wasps from entering.  Create a small entrance (and landing strip) between the deep and 1st Illinois for the guard bees to work and the nuc's small foraging force to enter.  This helps stimulate migration up into the Illinois, and they don't have to traverse the inside height of the deep to put stores upstairs.

Always remember to keep an eye on the bottom of the inner cover; moisture there means insufficient ventilation as the gals evaporate the nectar down!

No Matter where you are, remember how you got here!  We are all here for a reason, and I believe we've been Divinely Guided in the getting here.
I can track back to my earliest childhood and know that every move, decision and event has helped me be the person I am in the place where I am.  "Good" or 'bad", they all have contributed.  I'll bet the same can be said by / about / for you.  Upon re-entering civilian life, I decided to "hang up my guns", turning down an offer in Law Enforcement on the same day I accepted a position  with a Utility Company.  Within a few years, my job there was as a Meter Reader / Collector (on delinquent accounts).  One particularly bright sunny September day in 1980 I was instructed to turn off the power at a business that was run by some unsavory "connected" characters.  Lemme tell ya - you don't bring rubber insulating gloves to an *ss-kicking contest.
When I was discharged from the hospital, it took them a few more years and several surgeries before they gave up & said I was no longer employable.  I've never healed well enough to be able to give an employer 40 hours a week, so I've had 40 years of scrabbling & scrounging, creating my own jobs and income.  
So, you might say I was booted into the world of  Self Reliance.
I'll bet that many of you have equally interesting - and often painful - stories regarding your arrival in the American Redoubt.  I'm looking forward to the day when the dust settles, we're back to sitting around simmering cast-iron Dutch Ovens again, sampling each other's cooking, poking each other in the ribs and telling our stories.  Just like before, gathered at the river.
Hang onto that picture.  Hold that thought.  We've done a lot together here since '04, with a little more to go.  We signed on to this gig and, together, we'll make it through.
Just like the song, "Shall we Gather at the River . . ."
You betcha.  And we'll be throwing rolls of TP all over Ken & Dee's trees.
