Gabriella Germandi the author of Queen of Flowers and Pearls has created a narrative performance out of her novel. In the
show Gabriella tells stories about her own family as well as reciting
extracts from the book and interspersing the narrtives with traditional
Ethiopian songs. This a a wonderful moving and at the same time
uplifting show that Gabreilla performed in the Rua Red Theatre In
Italo-Ethiopian, Gabriella was born in Addis Ababa in 1965, and she
moved to Italy in 1979, where she lives in Bologna, her father’s town.
Following the art of the metaphor typical of Ethiopia’s cultural
tradition, she writes and acts in narrative plays that she presents in
Italy, Switzerland and US. She conducts creative writing seminars in
schools concerning the search for «each individual’s unique identity»,
to be contrasted with «collective identities», as a road to peace. For
two years, she was director of the Festival Evocamondi, a gathering of
narratives and music from around the world, organized by the periodical
«El Ghibli», in Bologna. Her intense theatrical and theoretical activity
concerning multiple identities and writing has long interested scholars
in here and abroad.
