What is Global Challenges?

Global Challenges is an exciting national blended learning course and eBook made possible by the collaborative efforts of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ (AASCU) American Democracy Project (ADP) and the AASCU Global Engagement Scholars (teaching faculty from 11 AASCU campuses). Global Challenges is an AASCU Red Balloon Project. The Global Engagement Scholars are one of the AASCU Civic Engagement in Action Series initiatives. The project enjoys support from the New York Times digital content repository. Fort Hays State University provides administrative support for this project.

To learn more about our blended learning course and the seven global challenges, visit our website at www.AASCUGlobalChallenges.org, or open the Prezi presentation link below.

The Global Challenges curriculum takes inspiration from the work of one of Washington's leading nonpartisan think tanks, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (http://csis.org/program/seven-revolutions). CSIS's Seven Revolutions Project identifies seven important trends that have the potential to transform the way we live and interact with others.  Those seven key challenges are:

  • population
  • resources
  • technology
  • information
  • economies
  • conflict, and
  • governance.

Global Challenges Course and eBook

In addition to the collaborative resources available in this website, faculty interested in teaching Global Challenges may make use of the national blended learning course or the eBook.

The Global Challenges blended learning course is delivered through the Epsilen eLearning Environment, a powerful resource for sharing course content and networking.  It is a web-based application that allows students to access course materials, the New York Times digital content reporistory and more.  The course can be used as a turnkey course or in a fully customizable adopt-and-adapt format.  The Epsilen course shell comes complete with:

  • sample syllabus
  • learning objectives
  • lesson modules
  • quizzes/exams
  • assignments
  • discussion forums
  • assessment tools
  • student guide
  • current and archived New York Times resources
  • content videos
  • teaching toolkit
The cost for students is $50/student.  It is not necessary to have an Epsilen site-license in order to use the Global Challenges Epsilen-based course.  Register now to offer the course on your campus.

If your class would benefit from the Global Challenge content, but the turnkey blended learning course in Epsilen isn't the right fit for your campus or curriculum, our new eBook may be the resource you need.  It is an interactive product with much of the course content from the Epsilen-based course but without features such as quizzes, exams, assignments, and forums.  The eBook is an excellent choice for faculty who wish to cover some or all of the Global Challenges content in the context of a course that includes additional content or has overall learning objectives that differ from the Epsilen-based blended learning course.  Order your $14.99 copy in either a "bring your own device" format from the VitalSource bookshelf or in the iBooks format for your iPad.
