Went to the Tattoo for the first time in about 10 years and was most impressed! Edinburgh comes even more alive at this time of year so it is only appropriate for us to liven up the group with a Festival approach as well. Time to be thinking about the August meeting on Monday 26 August at 8.00 pm.

Last year we experimented with a 'Think on your feet sitting down' meeting where attendees popped their ideas for topics into a hat on the night and we drew one at random. It was good fun. This year we are going one further.

On the night you will again be invited to submit a topic but the group will meet as small tables of 6-8 people and each table will draw a topic from the hat. There will be an hour of discussion and then a social session where people can mingle and exchange comments on the topics they were discussing.

So, a little bit more intimate and informal where everyone should have a chance to contribute while retaining the benefits of the larger group.

In September we will revert to the normal format of choosing a topic in advance and the Poll is already open.

As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but keep the ideas coming if you have a great topic you are burning to see discussed.

New suggestions welcome!.

Especially welcome are ideas from the newer members who have joined over the last few months. It's one way to make sure the group stays relevant and interesting for you.

You can Vote or change your Vote right up to late on Monday 16 September.

Do also remember the Discussion Forum. This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll. You can also see notices for non group events.

It's good to see that some of you have added Photos to your profiles but we'd all like to be able to recognise each other at meetings and it would be great to see a few more of you give us the benefit of your portrait. You can add it here:

It seems to come round so fast and to be accompanied by a change for the worse in the weather but yes, it's Festival time again. Street theatre in the Royal Mile, lots of noise from the Castle and something a bit different for our Group too! Time to be thinking about the August meeting on Monday 26 August at 8.00 pm.

Time to be thinking about the July meeting tomorrow on Monday 22 July at 8.00 pm.

Remember we meet on the 4th Monday as usual and not the last Monday in July.

The topic is:

In Whom We Trust: Is Trust essential in society? Who do we trust - or not? How do we decide? What if trust is broken?

As usual, there is a file available, Trust, that you can download for some interesting information. Of course, you don't have to read anything, just bring your views and opinions.

I shall be there early from 7.30 pm. Look for the Group signs in the window of the Coffee Lounge, between the Bar entrance (on the left) and the Hotel entrance (on the right). We will be in the middle and accessible from either entrance. Enjoy the sandwiches. The bar also does a great range of food and snacks.

Ed the Head will be there too, waiting for you. Do try to be there in good time so we can get the seating sorted in case it is crowded.

New suggestions welcome!.

Especially welcome are ideas from the newer members who have joined over the last few months. It's one way to make sure the group stays relevant and interesting for you.

August's meeting will be an opportunity to draw topics you suggest out of a hat on the night but we can be looking ahead to September's meeting for your future topics.

Once again a topic has emerged as a narrow winner so t
ime to be thinking about the July meeting on Monday 22 July at 8.00 pm.

Remember we meet on the 4th Monday as usual and not the last Monday in July.

The leading topic in the Poll is:

In Whom We Trust: Is Trust essential in society? Who do we trust - or not? How do we decide? What if trust is broken?

In my young day, yes, I know that was a long time ago, there were certain people you were brought up to trust. Your religious leader (priest or minister), your teachers and your bank manager. Of course that is taking for granted that you could trust your parents (apart from the bits about Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy). But how many people today would be willing to place their absolute faith in any of these professionals. (Come to that, I'm still a bit upset about Santa Claus!!)

It often seems that we can't trust anyone these days. Headlines hit us on a regular basis showing that those in whom we have placed our reliance have betrayed us. Trust has turned to Rust with the T of Truth the casualty.

But then our more cynical associates were always inclined to say that we should not trust anyone. Everyone has an angle and you have to be on your guard at all times. We learn the hard way. Fool me once, shame on you: fool me twice, shame on me! We are supposed to grow worldly wise and wary.

However, we might ask if it is possible or reasonable to live in a world entirely without trust. So, OK, sometimes you are going to be let down, deceived or betrayed but, on the other hand, much of the time people do live up to our expectations and even exceed them. If we are to trust no one, we are going to miss out on the many positive experiences we can have. Not to mention that going around mistrusting everyone is just plain hard work.

So perhaps the issues are who we should trust, how we decide to trust and how much we trust.

Let he or she who has never broken a trust throw the first brickbat. I know we all try to live up to the trust others place in us but, inherently, none of us is perfect and so, sometimes, sometimes for what we convince ourselves are good reasons, we break that trust. Does that mean no one should ever trust us again? Trust is not infinite and there are always going to be limits. How do we recognise those limits?

When we say we trust someone, what exactly are we expecting? A perfection we cannot attain ourselves? Are our expectations sometimes unrealistic? And if trust is broken, can it be mended? Do people deserve a second, or even a third, chance?

Perhaps the area in which broken trust hurts most is in those we love, where our emotional investment is at stake. What does that say about the way in which we deal with relationships? Do we place unrealistic burdens of trust, truth and honesty on those we care about most? What about the white lie, the information withheld to avoid distress or, indeed, Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy? Do even minor deceptions amount to breaches of trust?

Who do you trust and on what do you base that trust? How do you, or have you in the past, deal with situations where trust has been broken? Have there been times when you felt it justified to break a trust? Are you ever going to forgive your bank manager?

As usual, so much to discuss.

OK, I'm not a tennis fan but it was great to see Andy Murray win through. He's had a rough ride from critics over the years and it is great to see him persevere to success. Time, however, to be thinking about the July meeting on Monday 22 July at 8.00 pm. Remember we meet on the 4th Monday as usual and not the last Monday in July.

Maybe taking the rough with the smooth and persevering has something to do with the current leading topic in the Poll which is:

Happy Ever After?: Everyone seems to be searching for Happiness but is it OK to be miserable? What is Happiness?

Wimbledon again and all the pundits are once again pondering Andy Murray's chances. Not being a tennis fan, I'm not too bothered but I wish him luck. Time, however, to be thinking about the July meeting on Monday 22 July at 8.00 pm. After a hectic final tussle, we eventually have a winning topic with a narrow marging. So time to be thinking about the June meeting on Monday 24 June at 8.00 pm.

The leading topic in the Poll is:

Good and Evil: Do they really exist or are they just variable labels we can apply to behaviours that change with the times?

The concepts of Good and Evil have often seemed to be central to any philosophy of Morality. It seems easy to split our ethics into two opposing camps: good v bad, god v devil, angels v demons. But is that as straightforward as it appears?

First we might ask how we define Good and Evil in absolute terms. After all ethics and morality often seem to be related particular times or particular situations. In sociological terms there has always been a tendency for characterisation of our own 'in' group as Good whereas the 'out' group of our enemies has been characterised as Evil. It is often seen as Evil to kill, but Good to kill our enemies.

Was the Inquisition Good in its view that extreme tortures and executions were justified in order to save an individual's 'soul'. Or the Abbot at the siege of Beziers, suppressing the Cathars Heresy in France, who, when told there were Good Catholics amongst the Evil Heretic Cathars, said "Kill them all. God will know his own."

Our understanding of morality and ethics has developed over time. One might argue that issues like Human Rights are an indication that we are perhaps more sensitive to ethics than ever. Does that mean that acts that were Good in the past are now Evil, or perhaps acts that were once Evil are now Good? Was slavery, for example, always Evil when it was supported by moral leaders who believed it was right and Good? Or is there some absolute notion of Good and Evil by which all acts and beliefs across all times can be judged? If so, what are the criteria? Will our times and our society be judged as Good or Evil by those who follow after in history? Who decides?

But maybe such a dichotomy is itself a bit of a cop out. Nietzsche believed that it was much too simplistic and essentially a device that enabled philosophers to engage in lazy thinking. He suggested that really much is 'Beyond Good and Evil' in the sense that acts, both individual and societal, stem from the psychology of the times. Indeed there is perhaps no totally clear distinction but a rather blurred boundary. We may contain the elements of both Good and Evil in such a way that much of our behaviour cannot clearly be classified as either, but rather some grey amorphous combination. Perhaps Good and Evil are simply the end points on a linear scale with most of us falling somewhere between.

And if we look at the present, the times we live in right now, are there things we would like to identify as Good or Evil? Would everyone agree? Is it necessary for everyone to agree? If my 'Good' is your 'Evil', who arbitrates? We live in a time when we are very aware of the conflicts of morality across cultures and beliefs. Who is right? Or are right and wrong simply another false dichotomy?

As usual, so much to discuss.

Spent the last few days in London so you are getting short notice of the close of the Poll this month. Voting ends late tomorrow. Time, however, to be thinking about the June meeting on Monday 24 June at 8.00 pm.

There's a new current leading topic in the Poll but its lead is very narrow:

Healthy Responsibility: Should treatment be freely available where poor health behaviours have been a major part of illness?

Still just time for that choice to change though. As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but keep the ideas coming if you have a great topic you are burning to see discussed.

I've been watching them set up for the Meadows Festival today and it looks like the weather may be good. Hope some of you make it there. Time, however, to be thinking about the June meeting on Monday 24 June at 8.00 pm.

The current leading topic in the Poll is:

Good and Evil: Do they really exist or are they just variable labels we can apply to behaviours that change with the times?

Still time for that choice to change though. As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but keep the ideas coming if you have a great topic you are burning to see discussed.

Get your
Votes in and make your voice heard.

To make a Suggestion or Vote  just click on the appropriate link below.

New suggestions welcome!.

Especially welcome are ideas from the newer members who have joined over the last few months. It's one way to make sure the group stays relevant and interesting for you.

You can Vote or change your Vote right up to late on Monday 17 June.

Do also remember the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll. You can also see notices for non group events and I've posted information about this year's Dangerous Ideas Festival where we will, once again, be having an extra meeting on Monday 17 June as part of their programme.

Time now to be preparing for the May meeting on Monday 27 May at 8.00 pm.

The topic is:

The Counselling Illusion?: Can talking therapies really change the way you are or behave. Is our personality set at birth?

As usual, there is a file available, Counselling, that you can download for some interesting information.

It looks like it could be a bumper attendance.

Once again, you, the members, have selected a topic, so time to be thinking about the meeting on Monday 27 May at 8.00 pm.

The leading topic in the Poll is:

The Counselling Illusion?: Can talking therapies really change the way you are or behave. Is our personality set at birth?

This topic really raises a number of questions.

Firstly, we might reasonably ask what personality is anyway and how it is formed. From the trite descriptions often found in horoscopes and cheap magazine questionnaires we can move through the popular, but of doubtful validity, Jungian types in the Myers Briggs tests to more widely accepted concepts like the 'Big 5' personality dimensions. But the question might remain, how accurately do any of these portray us and how much effect does that have on how we deal with problems and issues in day to day life?

Do we have a single, fixed, personality that is somehow predetermined by our genetics, or is it formed through our experience? Do we, in fact, have several personalities that vary according to context: one personality at work, another at home and a third that emerges after a few glasses of wine?

Often people will say that they came out of counselling 'a changed person', but what does that mean? Can counselling really change your basic traits or is it simply a way of learning new perspectives, attitudes and practices that may help your 'old self' cope more effectively? Is it for everyone? Or does successful counselling depend more on the readiness and willingness of the client to change than the actual model of counselling used?

And what about the different counselling models? So many different brands to choose from. Are they really different and which one is best for you?

It has been suggested that the counselling model accounts for only around 15% of the outcome with more major factors being the motivation and resources of the client and the strength of the positive relationship between client and therapist. So maybe the counselling itself is just an illusion; a framework that validates other processes. It has been referred to as 'The Dumbo Effect' after the Disney cartoon elephant who needed a 'magic feather' to give him the confidence to fly. Is counselling simply another magic feather?

It has also been suggested that the growth of counselling is a reflection of the 'dysfunction' model of personal unhappiness. The notion that distress or failure to cope essentially reflects some underlying pathology that needs treatment. Perhaps we should be concentrating on personal responsibility and acceptance that life is a roller coaster that will not always give us a smooth ride. As one therapist used to advertise in a wall poster "Life is tough! If you are wise, you learn to live with that!"

As usual, so much to discuss.

May the best topic win...

Just three days to go to vote for the May topic, so time to be thinking about the meeting on Monday 27 May at 8.00 pm.
