Current leading topic in the Poll is:

Choice or Conditioning: Does advertising sell us what we want or make us want what it sells? How does it work?

Still plenty of time for that to change, so time to be thinking about the November meeting on
Monday 26 November at 8.00 pm.

As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but more could still be added if you have a great idea you are burning to see discussed.

Get your
Votes in and make your voice heard.

New suggestions welcome!.

Especially welcome are ideas from the newer members who have joined over the last few months. It's one way to make sure the group stays relevant and interesting for you.

Further Suggestions can be included until Sunday 18 November and you can Vote or change your Vote right up to late on Monday 19 November.

Do also remember the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll.

December Yule Buffet - Book early!

E-mail sent by Ray Miller, Monday, 29th October 2012 @ 12:28pm

Thanks to those who signed up to express an interest in this event. We reached the minimum number required. Places will, however, be limited so early booking is recommended.

I can now confirm that it will go ahead in place of our usual December meeting that would have fallen on Christmas Eve. So we will be meeting a week earlier than usual for a Yule Social instead.

The Links Hotel has agreed to provide us with a buffet based on their excellent Tapas menu, cooked in the Spanish style by their Spanish trained chef. It incorporates a great range of vegetarian and meat dishes to suit everyone with that Mediterranean flavour that will banish the winter blues. Drinks and wine can be ordered from the bar.

Places are limited and payment in advance will be required to book your attendance. Selecting the number of tickets and Attend will take you to a payment page. If this causes problems for anyone, let me know so that alternative arrangements can be made.

The cost is a very affordable £12 - excellent value.

I hope to see you there.

When: Monday, 17th December 2012 at 7:30pm - 10pm

I hope you're all ready for our October meeting on Monday 22 October at 8.00 pm. The topic is:

The Bare Facts: What is it about nudity or partial nudity that makes it so titillating yet potentially so offensive?

As usual, there is a file available, Nudity, that you can download for some interesting information. Of course, you don't have to read anything, just bring your views and opinions.

I shall be there early from 7.30 pm. Look for the Group signs in the window of the Coffee Lounge, between the Bar entrance (on the left) and the Hotel entrance (on the right). We will be in the middle and accessible from the bar entrance if you want to find the sandwiches. The bar also does a great range of food and snacks.

Ed the Head will be there too, waiting for you. Do try to be there in good time so we can gather all your topic suggestions in advance.

Notice!!! (we need 15 people signed up by Monday to go ahead - so far we have 11)

December Event:

The normal December meeting of the Group would fall on Christmas Eve this year and thus will be cancelled.

It has been suggested that, as an alternative, we have some sort of Midwinter meal/buffet event instead the week before (i.e. Monday 17 December).

The Links (our current venue) has a great Tapas menu prepared by their Spanish trained chef and one option is to see if they could do a Tapas buffet for us. Cost would be likely to be in the range of £12-14 a head (not including what you buy from the bar!)

A buffet format would allow for lots of party style interaction and sounds interesting.

Before going any further, I need to know how many people would be interested. There is no money required at this stage but, if it goes ahead, members will be required to sign up to a final notice and pay in advance.

The more the merrier although there will probably be a maximum number of 30 and I will only go ahead if at least 15 people express a committed interest.

The timescale for making the decision will be our October meeting on 22 October - so if you like the idea please respond now as Attending to this announcement.

Once again we have a winner in the Poll for the topic of our October meeting on Monday 22 October at 8.00 pm.

The Bare Facts: What is it about nudity or partial nudity that makes it so titillating yet potentially so offensive?

It has been a fascinating summer from the point of view of Nudity. Prince Harry turns out to be a fairly normal naughty boy in Vegas and the main issue is whether his security guards should have checked for camera phones. The general reaction seems to have been a favourable one - boys will be boys.

On the other hand a major international row brews when the Duchess of Cambridge (or the Countess of Strathearn as she is here in Scotland) is snapped by the long lens of a paparazzi photographer in a private, naked moment for the tittilation of populist magazine readers. Why all the interest? As far as I know she has pretty much the same attributes as any other woman her age, albeit better looking than some, so what makes it so important to see that a future Queen of England is really just a human being after all.

Here in Scotland, of course, we had the case of Stephen Gough raising it's head again (no pun intended) as the Naked Rambler was not only jailed (for the umpteenth time) but referred for psychiatric assessment on the basis that he chooses not to wear clothes and present himself as nature intended. Are bodies really that offensive? Why do we hide away nudist beaches and consign topless sunbathing only to 'foreign' locations? Is there a difference between Nudity and Naturism?

On the other hand we have the world of Art where Nudity is seen as graceful and decorative; celebrating the inherent beauty of the natural form. Whether in paintings, photographs or statuary, we are happy to place them on public display and take our children round to admire the work of the great. artistic masters. Is this really different from Page 3 girls or Playboy (or Playgirl for that matter).

In fact that raises an interesting point (again no pun intended) as male nudity is often seen as less acceptable than female nudity. Where the naked female may be admired or desired, the male nude is often seen as aggressive and threatening. The Naked Rambler had a female companion on some of his travels: equally naked but never arrested. Food for thought. Also male streakers tend to be dealt with more severely than female streakers. The latter are treated as a bit of fun and the former as a breach of the peace.

We all have naked bodies: we see them in the mirror every day. The only real objection I have to mine is that it is not quite the perfect physical specimen that it once was (if it ever was). Why is my own body simply a normal fact of life yet someone else's becomes an object of moral debate?

As usual, so much to discuss.

Members may be interested in an event taking place on 13th October in the Debating Hall at Teviot, Edinburgh called 'Awakened State'. It's a platform for cutting-edge independent researchers, authors and free thinkers to present their work on various subjects of interest and concern to the public such as debt, health, current affairs, consciousness and psychopathy. It's a full day (10am 'til late) featuring presentations and film, there's also a variety of campaign organisations such as Positive Money, No2ID, NORML UK and No Cuts taking stalls.

It's essentially about stimulating discussion about what's going on in the world, the nature of our reality, and how we can contribute to change that will better serve the people and planet. More information available @

I hope you're all ready for our September meeting on Monday 24 September at 8.00 pm. The topic is:

Human Rights?: Are there really Universal Rights or just guidelines for good moral behaviour, responsibilities and privileges?

Once again we have a winner in the Poll for the topic of our September meeting on Monday 24 September at 8.00 pm.

Human Rights?: Are there really Universal Rights or just guidelines for good moral behaviour, responsibilities and privileges?

I have been fascinated by the recent campaign from Save the Children on TV with the slogan "No child is born to die".

Now, don't get me wrong. I fully support the great work that Save the Children carry out and deplore the need for such a charity in the face of what Robert Burns accurately tagged as 'Man's inhumanity to man'.

Nonetheless it does seem a very odd slogan as surely EVERY child is born to die. It's just a matter of when, where and how. Every birth carries a sexually transmitted disease that is inevitably fatal (so far) - Life.

Which brings me to the Human Right to Life. If it is a Right then it is one we are all ultimately denied. I wonder to whom we should be complaining and what court will defend us.

If we look at the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights we can see that there are all sorts of entitlements we apparently have. But we might ask the same question. Are they really Rights? Are they unlimited rights? Are they universal?

Who decides which rights we should have and who decides how they are defended if breached? How do we balance one set of rights with another when they conflict? What about cost: are they always affordable?

Do rights apply equally to those who deny they exist? Do rights come with responsibilities and do those who are irresponsible have the same rights?

In fact, are Rights simply expressions of an idealised morality that may, in many cases, actually be impracticable? And where they are practicable, are they actually priveleges that need to be earned in some way? Perhaps by conforming to the social morality that creates them?

OK, so lets suppose there are Rights. We know what the Declaration says but what would be on YOUR list?

As usual, so much to discuss.

I shall be there early from 7.30 pm. Look for the Group signs in the window of the Coffee Lounge, between the Bar entrance (on the left) and the Hotel entrance (on the right). So Edinburgh returns to normal, or as normal as it gets. Nights begin drawing in and the air turns even chillier after a summer dogged by the fickle Jet Stream. Warm evenings indoors and stimulating conversation are just the recipe you need.

So, time to be thinking about the September meeting on Monday 24 September at 8.00 pm.

Current leading topic in the Poll is:

Cradle to Grave: Can (should) the welfare state provide total care for everyone? What are the priorities? What gets left out?

However, as usual, there are twelve topics to choose from, so it could all still change and more could still be added if you have a great idea you are burning to see discussed.

Get your
Votes in and make your voice heard.

New suggestions welcome!.

Especially welcome are ideas from the newer members who have joined over the last few months. It's one way to make sure the group stays relevant and interesting for you.

Further Suggestions can be included until Sunday 16 September and you can Vote or change your Vote right up to late on Monday 17 September.

To make a Suggestion or Vote  just click on the appropriate link below.

Do also remember the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll.

It's good to see that some of you have added Photos to your profiles but we'd all like to be able to recognise each other at meetings and it would be great to see a few more of you give us the benefit of your portrait. You can add it here:

The August meeting was very successful at the new venue of The Links Bar and there was a unanimous vote to use it again for September. The setting was very comfortable and, most importantly, quiet enough so that everyone could be heard easily. The sandwiches were great too and a generous amount. In fact we could have done with a few more hungry people!

So, time to be thinking about the September meeting on Monday 24 September at 8.00 pm.

As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but more could still be added if you have a great idea you are burning to see discussed.

Monday: Open Night! (Note the new venue and free sandwiches)

The Links Hotel and Bar is easy to find and convenient for transport and parking. See the directions link above. They are giving us a luxurious lounge to ourselves and there will be a supply of free sandwiches from 7.30 pm for those who arrive early.

The winner option for discussion in this month's Poll was:

Think on your feet (sitting down): No preparation, but lets draw a topic out the hat from suggestions on the night!

So, for the first time, we have no pre-determined topic this month and no prior reading material. On the night I will ask members who turn up in good time (hence the bribe of sandwiches) to write suggestions for discussion on a slip of paper that will go into the draw.

Suggestions should be in keeping with the spirit of the group but this is an opportunity to raise the kinds of ideas that interest you that have not yet made it in the Poll. If we have as large a turnout as last time we may draw two topics and split into two groups depending on people's preferences.

Equally, if discussion on a topic begins to run dry, we will have the option of moving on to another drawn at random.

It has the makings of being an exciting night!

As usual, I shall be there early from 7.30 pm.

New suggestions for September welcome!.

Do remember that we will be meeting at a new venue this month.

The Links Hotel and Bar is a recently renovated hostelry situated on Bruntsfield Links close to the Meadows. Convenient for transport from Lothian Road, just up past Tollcross and across the Links from Bruntsfield Place and the Bruntsfield Hotel. Should be easy for everyone to find and there is free evening local parking.
(See directions link above)

They are giving us a luxurious lounge to ourselves and there will be a supply of free sandwiches from 7.30 pm for those who arrive early.

Once again (seems to be happening a lot recently) we had two topics tie for the top spot. One had all 9 and 10 votes except for one member who gave it a 1. The other had a wider variety of scores from 5 to 10. I therefore judged the winner to be the first topic - the suggestion of a form of 'Open Night':

Think on your feet (sitting down): No preparation, but lets draw a topic out the hat from suggestions on the night!

It just goes to show how important your Vote is!

Thanks to all who suggested venues. It proved quite difficult to find one but Tatiana suggested the venue that came up trumps in the end. The Links Hotel and Bar is a recently renovated hostelry situated on Bruntsfield Links.
