Pancake Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Valentines Day of LOVe...would it be too cynical to think we might be being conditioned into all these celebrations, one after another? Surely not! Time, instead,  to be thinking about the February meeting on Monday 25 February at 8.00 pm.

The current leading topic in the Poll remains:

Self esteem: What helps us feel good about ourselves? Can we build a positive, yet realistic, self image? Does it matter?

Still time for that choice to change though. As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but keep the ideas coming if you have a great topic you are burning to see discussed.

Just 3 days of Voting to go, so get your
Votes in and make your voice heard.

To make a Suggestion or Vote  just click on the appropriate link below.

New suggestions welcome!.

Especially welcome are ideas from the newer members who have joined over the last few months. It's one way to make sure the group stays relevant and interesting for you.

You can Vote or change your Vote right up to late on Monday 18 February.

Do also remember the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll.

It's good to see that some of you have added Photos to your profiles but we'd all like to be able to recognise each other at meetings and it would be great to see a few more of you give us the benefit of your portrait. You can add it here:

Maintaining its lead, we have a topic for the January meeting on Monday 28 January at 8.00 pm.

Defining Madness: Are we at risk of defining many everyday experiences as mental illness? What is normality?

Life is often neither easy nor fair. If we are wise, we learn how to deal with that. We learn from both adverse and beneficial experiences, adapt our behaviours and attitudes and acquire better coping skills. As Friedrich Nietzsche said "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger."

In psychological terms we can call it 'Locus of Control'. We can either see ourselves as individuals who use the resources available to us to manage our lives actively (Internal Locus), or we can see ourselves as the victims of circumstances, struggling to keep afloat in an ocean of storms created by events beyond our management (External Locus).

The truth is that there is generally a balance. Some things may indeed be beyond our immediate control, yet we may remain able to make positive decisions about how we deal with the practical problems and emotions that result.

A potentially alarming trend, however, is the 'medicalisation' of the struggles we may face. One major area of concern in Scotland has been the rise in the rate of prescription of anti-depressants.

One in seven Scots are now taking antidepressants following a four-fold increase in prescriptions in the last two decades.

Antidepressant prescriptions have risen steadily from 1.26m drugs dispensed in 1993/94 to just over five million in 2011/12.

Also, prescriptions for anti-psychotic drugs have almost doubled in the same period, according to figures released by the NHS Information Services Division (ISD).

Meanwhile, the use of drugs to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which is most commonly diagnosed in children, is now 20 times higher than it was 15 years ago.

Is everybody going mad?

Is our mental health really deteriorating at an alarming rate? Or are we somehow re-defining what mental illness is?

It has been suggested that we are increasingly intolerant of the ups and downs of life and have come to define 'normality' as a pleasant state of continual 'happiness'. Failure to achieve this state becomes 'pathological' - a mental health condition for which treatment is sought. Are we in danger of defining Life itself as a mental illness?

The question is highly topical. The American Psychiatric Association is about to release the 5th edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). It has been strongly criticised for radically increasing the number of experiences and problems that can be defined as mental illness. An example might be Oppositional Defiant Disorder where teenage children have powerful arguments with their parents at least once a week for six months. Sound familiar? And what, exactly, is Borderline Personality Disorder?

The British Psychological Society criticized proposed diagnoses as:

"clearly based largely on social norms, with 'symptoms' that all rely on subjective judgements... not value-free, but rather reflect[ing] current normative social expectations"

They noted doubts over the reliability, validity, and value of existing criteria, that personality disorders were not normed on the general population, and that "not otherwise specified" categories covered a "huge" 30% of all personality disorders.

It also expressed a major concern that:

"clients and the general public are negatively affected by the continued and continuous medicalisation of their natural and normal responses to their experiences... which demand helping responses, but which do not reflect illnesses so much as normal individual variation".

So, what's the deal? What is Madness and what is Normality?

As usual, so many issues to explore.

Just over a week to go to the January meeting on Monday 28 January at 8.00 pm. Just two days to get in any final topic Votes! This time there has been no change in the favourite.

The current leading topic in the Poll, by a narrow margin, is still:

Defining Madness: Are we at risk of defining many everyday experiences as mental illness? What is normality?

There is still just time for that choice to change though. As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but keep the ideas coming if you have a great topic you are burning to see discussed. There are already a few fun suggestions that will appear in the February Poll.

I hope you all had a good New Year and managed to avoid the flu that shut me down for a bit over the festive season. So, in the end, I had to give the street party a miss - but my tickets were welcomed by some friends who had not expected to go. But time to be thinking about the January meeting on Monday 28 January at 8.00 pm.

The current leading topic in the Poll is a change from a week ago, though by a narrow margin:

If I Ruled the World: What 10 things would you change? What would you eliminate? What would you introduce?

No doubt one that will suit all the megalomaniacs among you! If I ruled the world, every day would be the first day of spring, every heart would have a new song to sing, and we'd sing of the joy every morning would bring... (See Tony Bennett)

Still time for that choice to change though. As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but keep the ideas coming if you have a great topic you are burning to see discussed. There are already a few fun suggestions that will appear in the February Poll.

Nearly there with just three days to go before the meeting on Monday 26 November at 8.00 pm. The topic is:

Choice or Conditioning: Does advertising sell us what we want or make us want what it sells? How does it work?

As usual, there is a file available, Psychology of Advertising, that you can download for some interesting information. Of course, you don't have to read anything, just bring your views and opinions.

Yule Buffet

At the last count there were just three places left! I've asked the hotel whether they could accommodate more as some members have expressed an interest but not yet booked. I hope to confirm whether there will be more availability at the meeting on Monday and will keep you informed. It looks like baing a great evening and a bargain at just £12. You can see the details or buy tickets (assuming there are some left) HERE.

At the risk of advertising, I can tell you that we have a topic with a 70% popularity for the meeting on Monday 26 November at 8.00 pm.

Choice or Conditioning: Does advertising sell us what we want or make us want what it sells? How does it work?

Advertising is everywhere. It used to be just billboards, posters, cinemas and the ads in your local paper or magazine. Then we had the growth of commercial media and both radio and television carried an ever increasing range of advertising and sponsorship. Then we had sponsorship in sport and leisure activities.

Now, not only is it hard to escape advertising, the growth of the Internet has led to targeted adverts. It seems that whatever website I access I am offered the latest bargains from the House of Fraser because I once bought a coffee machine there and foolishly left a comment about it on their website.

Over 70% of my email is advertising spam and I really don't know why I'm targeted for women's lingerie - honest.

Not only that, I get constant phone calls when my house or car insurance is due, offers of reductions in my energy costs, solar panels, double glazing and all kinds of other unmentionables, despite being registered with the telephone preference service.

So, is our world being overtaken by advertising? Do we really need the goods and services on offer? Are we persuaded into rampant consumerism on the basis that if 7 out of 10 people like me have it, I should have it too? Do we really need the very latest gadget? Are we simply encouraging waste as we discard the discredited old for a new product that does exactly the same but comes in a glossier package?

OK, so sometimes we may find adverts helpful in drawing our attention to something we really want or need. They are certainly helpful in financing a whole range of services that we might not want to pay for directly - Google or Facebook or the choice of TV or radio channels.  But how often are we simply being manipulated by commercial interests?

Every time you go into a shop or supermarket, even the placing of products is an encouragement to buy. And what about the alleged threat of 'subliminal' advertising? How vulnerable are we to the subtle, and not so subtle, persuasions and how do they work? Using colour, sound and even our social insecurities to influence us.

Mind you, some adverts are entertaining in their own right and stick in your mind. What are the ones you think of - the best and the worst? How do you feel about the impact advertising has on your daily life?

As usual, so many issues to discuss.

New suggestions welcome!.

Events of interest notified by members.

From time to time members draw my attention to events that may be of interest to other members. In some cases I have circulated information through email. I have now redesignated part of the Discussion Forum for this use. Notices posted there will be listed on the front page of the website in the Updates column. There are a few simple requirements that you can read in the Group and Site Updates. So now you can use this site as a noticeboard to alert members to useful information.

Do remember to use the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll.

A picture's worth a thousand words.

It's good to see that some of you have added Photos to your profiles but we'd all like to be able to recognise each other at meetings and it would be great to see a few more of you give us the benefit of your portrait. You can add it here:

Everyone seems to be talking about Movember and the need to be aware of men's health issues. As someone who has had a moustache since the age of 18, I'm ahead of the game. Men, why not grow one for the November meeting? Ladies, why not sport a stick on one to support all us poor men?

With just three days left in the Poll, the current leading topic remains:

Choice or Conditioning: Does advertising sell us what we want or make us want what it sells? How does it work?

Still time for that to change, so time to be thinking about the November meeting on
Monday 26 November at 8.00 pm.

As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but more could still be added if you have a great idea you are burning to see discussed.
