A few days of reasonable sunshine and the city takes on a different aspect. Long may it last although it is raining again as I write this. Time to be thinking about the May meeting on Monday 27 May at 8.00 pm.

The current leading topic in the Poll is a change form last week - maybe the need for counselling in relation to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) has had an impact?:

The Counselling Illusion?: Can talking therapies really change the way you are or behave. Is our personality set at birth?

Still time for that choice to change though. As usual, there are twelve topics to choose from with some new entrants, but keep the ideas coming if you have a great topic you are burning to see discussed.

Votes in and make your voice heard.

To make a Suggestion or Vote  just click on the appropriate link below.

New suggestions welcome!.

Especially welcome are ideas from the newer members who have joined over the last few months. It's one way to make sure the group stays relevant and interesting for you.

You can Vote or change your Vote right up to late on Monday 20 May.

Do also remember the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll. You can also see notices for non group events and I've posted information about this year's Dangerous Ideas Festival where we will, once again, be having an extra meeting in June as part of their programme. There is also new information about the C G Jung Seminar for May and a change of venue for their August meeting.

It's good to see that some of you have added Photos to your profiles but we'd all like to be able to recognise each other at meetings and it would be great to see a few more of you give us the benefit of your portrait. You can add it here:

Time now to be preparing for the April meeting on Monday 22 April at 8.00 pm.

Remember that we meet on the 4th Monday as usual and not the last Monday in this month.

The leading topic, in the Poll, remained:

The Self Illusion: Modern science tells us there is no 'you' inside your head - so where are free will, choice and morality?

As usual, there is a file available, Self Illusion, that you can download for some interesting information. Of course, you don't have to read anything, just bring your views and opinions.

I shall be there early from 7.30 pm. Look for the Group signs in the window of the Coffee Lounge, between the Bar entrance (on the left) and the Hotel entrance (on the right). We will be in the middle and accessible from either entrance. Enjoy the sandwiches. The bar also does a great range of food and snacks.

Ed the Head will be there too, waiting for you. Do try to be there in good time so we can get the seating sorted in case it is crowded. It looks like it could be a bumper attendance.

Most of us believe that we possess a self - an internal individual who resides inside our bodies, making decisions, authoring actions and possessing free will. The feeling that a single, unified, enduring self inhabits the body - the 'me' inside me - is compelling and inescapable. This is how we interact as a social animal and judge each other's actions and deeds. But that sovereignty of the self is increasingly under threat from science as our understanding of the brain advances. Rather than a single entity, the self really seems to be a constellation of mechanisms and experiences that create the illusion of the internal you. We only emerge as a product of those around us as part of the different storylines we inhabit from the cradle to the grave. It is an every changing character, created by the brain to provide a coherent interface between the multitude of internal processes and the external world demands that require different selves.

That's tough enough in its own right but it raises many further questions. If there is no 'self' then what do we mean by 'will', let alone 'free will'? Do we have choices? Make decisions? Are our lives determined by our genes and experience with no room for personal responsibility or accountability? Are we just biological computers running to a pre-set programme - our 'identity' just the screen on which the output is displayed?

And where does that leave issues of morality, justice, integrity - even humanity? If there is no 'you' and no 'me' then who is it that even has this discussion and why? Do 'we' need a very different vocabulary just to enter a discussion on this topic? Does it have implications?

As usual, so much for 'us' to discuss!

Do also remember the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll. Once again the Voting has produced a winner with a week to go. Time then to be thinking about the March meeting on Monday 25 March at 8.00 pm.

Despite considerable volatility, the leading topic in the Poll, by a very slim margin, remained:

Perchance to Dream: What are dreams? Are they meaningful? Can you interpret them? Why do we sleep anyway?

Sleep and dreams have remained one of the mystery areas in psychology and philosophy in many respects. Surprising in a way, when you consider that most of us will spend up to one third of our lives in sleep and experience thousands of dreams.

The problem, of course, is that we are generally not able to subject the experience to conscious analysis while the state lasts. At best we have confused and confusing accounts of both sleep and dreams that are partially, and often erroneously, recalled after the event.

Take sleeplessness for example. Many people report feeling tired in the morning and that they have hardly slept all night, while objective records, through observation or EEG, show several periods of normal sleep pattern. What is a normal night's sleep anyway? Some people seem to get by on 4 hours, there is evidence that the body often requires at least 6 to undertake biological maintenance tasks, most people think 7-8 hours is about right and some people swear they need 10 or more. And it changes with age.

There is the problem of sleep disturbance and sleeplessness that can lead to mental and physical deterioration if it continues. What stops us sleeping and are there ways to improve our sleep? What is 'sleep hygiene' for example? How can it help?

And then there are dreams. A magical transportation into a land of metaphysical mystery, a source of insight into the future, a revelation of the forces at work in our buried unconscious, or just the brain sorting through the dross of the day and filing it while there is a period of slack? From primitive times to the present, many have seen dreams as both important and meaningful - but are they? What do we really know about dreams? What is lucid dreaming, where we become aware that we are dreaming within the dream?

Modern science is casting new light on many of these questions. Can we assimilate that with our own experience and come to some deeper understanding of this challenging topic?

As usual, so much to discuss.

Do also remember the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll.

Time to be thinking about the February meeting on Monday 25 February at 8.00 pm.

The winning topic in the Poll is:

Self esteem: What helps us feel good about ourselves? Can we build a positive, yet realistic, self image? Does it matter?

As usual, there is a file available, Self Esteem, that you can download for some interesting information.

New suggestions welcome!.

Especially welcome are ideas from the newer members who have joined over the last few months. It's one way to make sure the group stays relevant and interesting for you.

To make a Suggestion or Vote for March's topic, just click on the appropriate link below.

You can Vote or change your Vote right up to late on Monday 18 March.

Events of interest notified by members.

From time to time members draw my attention to events that may be of interest to other members. In some cases I have circulated information through email. I have now redesignated part of the Discussion Forum for this use. Notices posted there will be listed on the front page of the website in the Updates column. There are a few simple requirements that you can read in the Group and Site Updates. So now you can use this site as a noticeboard to alert members to useful information.

Do remember to use the Discussion Forum . This is your opportunity to continue the debates between meetings or to air the topics you'd like to discuss that never quite make it in the Poll.

A picture's worth a thousand words.

It's good to see that some of you have added Photos to your profiles but we'd all like to be able to recognise each other at meetings and it would be great to see a few more of you give us the benefit of your portrait. You can add it here:

I'm OK, you're OK!

Less than a week away and time to be thinking about the February meeting on Monday 25 February at 8.00 pm.

The winning topic in the Poll is:

Self esteem: What helps us feel good about ourselves? Can we build a positive, yet realistic, self image? Does it matter?

Self-esteem, self-worth, self-concept. These come out at the heart of so many aspects of Positive Psychology. They have a key role whether we are looking at the, often painful, rites of passage as we go through the teenage years, the pressures of work and a career, developing meaningful relationships or adjusting to major life changes such as the birth of children, divorce, the loss of loved ones or retirement and the transitions of older age.

Self-esteem is not about being arrogant, self-important or boastful. In fact, it is often the case that those with low self-esteem are most likely to portray these traits. Lacking confidence in themselves, they seek to boost it through dominance and control. Those who already know their own value do not need to and may be more empathic, supportive and considerate of others.

So what exactly is self-esteem and how do you get it? Partly it is a developmental process. The messages we get from others during our developmental years can either encourage us to see ourselves as worthwhile human beings or they can undermine our sense of value and purpose. We can either see ourselves as actors on the stage of life where we all have roles that contribute our bit to the outcome of the play, or feel we are just stage props of little importance or influence.

Self-esteem is a balanced view of our own strengths and weaknesses and the realization that we have an intrinsic value and purpose that entitles us to take an active part in determining the shape of our lives. The sense that we are not there merely to be ignored and sidelined but that our views and opinions matter.

At times we all find our self-esteem can take a knock. We are not always treated as we deserve and sometimes we are our own worst enemies as we become critical of our own worth and see only our mistakes and shortcomings. Can we avoid that or, at least, recover from it?

What helps us build a robust and realistic self-image that reinforces and develops our self-esteem? How can we help others do the same? Why is it important?

As usual, so many issues to discuss.
