Tara Goggins, President, called the regular meeting to order at 7 pm.
II. Approval of Minutes from Last Meeting
Tara Goggins, President, read the minutes from the last meeting. The minutes were approved as read.
III. Open Discussion
A. Upcoming Chapter Events
Bill Murray, Vice-President, gave a brief overview of the exciting events planned for the year. The planned events include four regular meetings with guest speakers, two social events, and one community volunteering event.
B. Proposed Committees
Bill Murray also announced the proposed new committees. Members were given a form to fill out to indicate which committee(s) they were interested in serving. The committees will be responsible various aspects of the chapter’s activities, such as planning the outreach/social events, science fair judging, social media posting, and successful creation of a scholarship fund which for deserving meteorology students.
Ryan Stinnett and Nancy Galloway conducted a raffle with the proceeds going to the Central Alabama NWA Scholarship Fund. The prize was a 2-night stay for 2 at the Historic Tutwiler Hotel in downtown Birmingham. The lucky winner was Brian Peters.
IV. Guest Speaker
Kevin Laws, Science and Operations Officer at NWS Birmingham, presented on the topic of Dual-Polarization Radar. He also gave some insight into how NWS Birmingham is trying to improve their tornado warnings. During the hour long presentation and discussion, attendees learned some of the characteristics of Dual Pol, how the new technology works, and how it may help with warning verification. He then briefly explained the new techniques that NWS Birmingham is utilizing in their effort to help reduce the False Alarm Rate (FAR) for tornado warnings, without compromising the Probability of Detection (POD).
V. New Business
Tara Goggins asked that all new business be discussed with the officers following the meeting.
