Outreach Opportunity: WeatherReady Fest

E-mail sent by Scott Martin, Tuesday, August 20th, 2019 @ 12:40pm

Good Afternoon

The NWA Foundation's WeatherReady Fest is coming up on September 7th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on the campus of UAH and we are in need of a few volunteers.

WeatherReady Fest is a fun and educational event for all. Family-friendly games, hands-on activities, and enlightening speakers will highlight this big, one-day weather festival.

Adults will have the opportunity to hear leading meteorologists, tour the National Weather Service Office, and get a first-hand look at forecasting technology at SWIRLL. Kids will love playing weather games while collecting stamps in their very own WeatherReady Passport for the chance to win exciting door prizes. They will have a blast learning how to be a Young Meteorologist in a special program on the center stage. Weather Channel Meteorologist Nick Walker will lead a stage show singing songs about weather preparedness. Owlie Skywarn and other mascots will be there to pump up the energy.

Volunteers for WeatherReady Fest will receive a free event polo shirt along with free lunch and drinks. If you would like to volunteer for the event, please email the chapter at
centralalnwa@gmail.com.

Thank you so much.

Dr. Keith Blackwell, renowned hurricane and winter weather expert, will be our guest for the evening. He has published several journal papers on tropical weather systems, including two studies on eyewall replacement cycles, low-level wind maxima, and extreme rainfall in landfalling hurricanes.  His current research is in intensity assessment and structural aspects of landfalling hurricanes.

He developed a numerical hurricane track and wind profile model called the Blackwell Over-Surface Hurricane Wind (BLOHW) Model.  With the help of this model, he has provided real-time hurricane forecasts for up to 100 industrial, educational and governmental clients through USA’s Coastal Weather Research Center during hurricane emergencies, including Danny (1997), Georges (1998), Lili (2002), Ivan (2004), and Katrina (2005).

NWA Officer Elections

E-mail sent by Mark Rose, Saturday, December 9th, 2017 @ 9:33am

The Central Alabama Chapter of the NWA recently held nominations for chapter officers.  Unfortunately those nominated for President had to decline their nominations for various reasons.  While I think we can fill the other positions fairly easily, we have to have a commander and chief.  If no one comes forward to take on this position, the chapter will be placed in a non-active status.  Please give this opportunity some serious consideration and contact me if you have any questions.
