CHARNWOOD HILLS RACE 2020 CANCELLATION
It is with regret that we have had to cancel this year's Charnwood Hills Race. Following the heavy rains, the trustees of Bradgate Park withdrew permission for us to cross the Park. As such we had no alternative but to cancel the race.
We have issued a refund to all entrants, this refund is for the full amount i.e. £17. The refund will be returned to the cardholder who made the payment for the original entry. For those of you that have transferred places you'll need to arrange to pass on the refund to the person who has taken your place as appropriate.
Once again we're really sorry not to be hosting you for the race this year. We will be taking steps to try and secure the running of the race next year so we hope to see you in 2021.
The Bowline Climbing Club are pleased to be hosting the 34th Charnwood Hills race on Sunday 2nd February 2020. This is a FELL RACE under Fell Running Association rules. The course is approx 14 miles long and follows public footpaths and open country involving 1200 feet of ascent over Bradgate, Broombriggs and Beacon Hill Country Parks. If you are considering entering the race please ensure you've read the race prospectus for more details.
Entries are on a first come first served basis, entries will open at 7pm on Sunday 10th November via EntryCentral. Entries are expected to sell out very quickly so we recommend setting up an account on EntryCentral before entries open. Please read the race prospectus before completing entering the race. Upon successfully entering the race the entry fee of £17 will taken from your debit/credit card. Note that we will guarantee places for the three fastest women and three fastest men from last year’s race (if you are one of these persons please contact us if you are not able to get an entry).
The categories for the race are now aligned to the FRA categories for Women (U21, U23, Senior, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75) and for Men (U21, U23, Senior, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, and 75). We will gives prizes to the first 3 women and men, and then a prize for winner of each category. Although the FRA don't have team categories we will continue to do teams, with a prize for the 1st men and women's teams with first 3 to count in each team (bottle of wine for each team member of the winning team). We will also give a prize to the first Bowline Woman and Man. This year's race will also feature some extra spot prizes!
The race is limited to 350 runners. No entries are allowed on the race day.
With the aim of improving the level of first aid skills amongst our members so we can look after each other when we are out climbing, walking, cycling; we are very pleased to be able to offer the 'REC Level 2 Emergency First Aid' course over the weekend of the 8th/9th February at our own club hut.
The course will be delivered by Helen and Steve Howe of Snowdonia First Aid, based in Llanberis. They ran the same course for us in 2015 and it was very good, particularly as Helen and Steve have both got many years experience in Mountain Rescue so they can bring a practical mountaineering perspective to the course.
The course is aimed at any Outdoor professional or enthusiast and focuses on what first aid to do in an emergency where quick help is not an option. There are 12 places available and the cost is only £80 per person for the whole weekend, including accommodation at our club hut, and plenty of tea/coffee throughout the course (Friday and Saturday evenings). We'll also share a group meal on the Saturday night and if last time is anything to go by a few drinks too!
This is a very competitive rate which the club has been able to secure for this course and we expect the places to go quickly. So we recommend booking straight away if you would like to come. You can pay with your Paypal account, or just using a debit/credit card (no requirement to create a Paypal account if you don't want to). Just click on the 'Buy Tickets' button above to book your place.
As well as providing a great set of skills for club members to help each other (or others) this course also covers the requirements of all the National Governing Body Award schemes such as Mountain Leader (ML), Mountain Instructor Award (MIA), Mountain Instructor Certificate (MIC), Single Pitch Award (SPA), British Canoe Union, Mountain Biking etc.
We have a friendly team of club members who volunteer to be part of our committee and co-ordinate the running of the club. We meet approprimately every 6 weeks and all club members are welcome to attend our committee meetings!

We will order in a few pizza's (Meat/veggie/vegan) to enjoy afterwards. Then we'll head off for drinks at a local haunt after so even if your are not joining us for the comp you can still get involved for a social drink.

Saturday, 14th March 2020 at 6pm - 8pmSunday, 15th March
Location: Dinorwic Mill Cottage, Tai Felin, Brynrefail, Caernarfon, Gwynedd
Now the hut has been refurbished we want to keep it in top condition. So this will be our maintenance weekend for 2020 where we will show the hut some love and get it ready for the winter.
On this special weekend you get to stay at the hut for free on Friday and Saturday nights in return for spending one whole day working on the hut (either the Saturday or the Sunday). Whichever day you are not working on the hut you can enjoy yourself climbing, walking, cycling or just chilling out!
There are plenty of different jobs to do at the hut and no special skills are required to help out. Although if you do have a particular talent in something like Plumbing, Electrics, Woodwork, etc I'm sure we can put your skills to good use.
We plan to give the hut a deep clean on the inside. Outside we'll make sure everything is tidy and trimmed, drainage channels clear, etc. There may also be repairs and project work to be done, more details nearer the time.
You'll need to bring your own food/drink for the weekend although tea/coffee plus cakes/biscuits will be provided. On Saturday night we'll walk into Llanberis for a curry and pint.
Please bring with you suitable clothing for doing mucky work (possibly in the cold and wet). And please bring any tools we might need (gardening tools are always useful).

Saturday, 11th April 2020 at 9am - 5pmSaturday, 18th April
Location: Forest of Fontainebleau, France
This Easter we will once again go to Fontainebleau. For those of you who aren't familiar with Font, Font is one of, if not the, most popular bouldering spots in the world. It has boulders of all levels scattered through dunes and forests. You can climb classic problems such as the La Marie Rose, the world's first 6A put up in 1946 by René Ferlet, or you can seek isolation in the more beautiful and remote parts of the forest. Font must be amongst the best places in the world to work on technique, and it's widely acknowledged if you can climb well in Font, then you can climb well anywhere. The boulders are comprised of rippled sandstone that almost always succumb to a delicate approach rather than raw strength.
Traditionally this is a somewhat self-organised meet. We usually travel by car. It takes about 4h in the UK and 4h in France, with a short ferry/eurotunnel crossing. We usually bring our own pads, but we can hire them locally.
This year we have booked two gites near Saint-Martin-en-Bière. One is for the families and the other for adult members. These will be filled on a first come first served basis. The cost for the week in the gite is £85 per person. This doesn't include bedding, towels, cleaning or extra heating. We will all chip in for the cleaning on the last day.
If you would like to stay in one of the gites that the club has booked then you need to reserve your place here on the website (click the Register button above) AND then you need to pay the full amount to the club account via bank transfer, please follow the instructions on the payments page.
Please pay promptly or we may release your reservation for someone else to book.
There are limited spaces in the gites, so we expect those to go quickly. There are numerous other options to stay in Font including camping, so please also bear these in mind. Any questions, feel free to ask Anthony Bishopp or any of the members that have been on previous years.
Friday, 22nd May 2020 at 9am - 7pmMonday, 25th May
Location: Fair Head
Considered by locals and those who make it across the Irish Sea to be the best cliff in the UK. Fairhead is as long as Stanage, but considerably taller.
The rock is excellent and columnar basalt and makes commanding lines.
The climbs start at VS and go to around E8. Below E3 these tend to follow pretty continuous crack lines, with 40-50m pitches being the norm, think double rack of cams and good jamming skills. The gear is generally supposed to be excellent.
The best way to travel would be to car share and get overnight ferries from Liverpool to Belfast. It's fair to point out that this isn't a cheap option and is probably around £100 each (depending on how many to a car and whether you take a cabin). Shorter, cheaper crossings go from Holyhead to Dublin.
Embarrassingly, it's probably cheapest to fly. For accommodation we have two options, very basic camping walking distance from the crag or a more luxurious campsite with showers a short distance away.
Saturday, 4th July 2020 at 8am - 6pmSunday, 5th July
Location: The Howgills, Lake District
Entries are open for the 42nd Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon which will be held over the weekend of the 4th/5th July 2020 in the The Howgills area of the Lake District. If you've never done a mountain marathon before then the Saunders is a good starting point. Several teams of club members have already entered so why not join us.
Friday, 28th August 2020 at 12pm - 5pmMonday, 31st August
Location: Bowderstone Bunkhouse
This August bank holiday we are visiting the Lake District for some wonderful adventures.
The Bowderstone hut is in the heart of the lakes and is nicely secluded with a 1 mile walk to a pub/tea room. Parking is very short walk away.
Its really well priced, £25 for the 3 nights.
The Bunkhouse is heated by 2 wood-burning stoves and is dog-friendly! Hot water is provided by electric heaters and it has a simply equipped kitchen (with two x 2-ring electric hobs, fridge, microwave, a selection of pans and basic cutlery and crockery), accessible shower-room (+ extra WC) and communal area. Linen and mattresses are not provided – we suggest bringing sleeping bags and camping-type self-inflating mattresses.
There is so much to do there is not nearly enough time. The places usually sell out fairly quickly so I recommend booking places promptly. To book a place at the Hut you need to purchase a ticket
Saturday, 12th September 2020 at 10am - 8pmSaturday, 19th September
For those looking for something a little different, Lundy has a lot to offer, with a broad range of grades, countless classics, and a wild and remote feel. The journey across in the MS Oldenburgh is unforgettable and only adds to the 'island experience', which really is quite unlike anything on the mainland.
Camping is available very cheaply or for those looking for something a little more comfortable then there is self catering options.
The social event of the year is of course the Bowline Climbing Club annual dinner and slideshow. The venue for this year is yet to be revealed but get the date in your diary now and we'll send out invites with all the details nearer the time. We expect to kickoff with drinks from 5pm, with food being served around 7pm.
If you'd like to share some pictures and do a little talk about your adventures that would be great. We hope to have time to fit everyone, to help us plan the slideshow so please let us know when you book if you'd like do a slot and we'll contact you to make arrangements.
We'll also be doing showing a photo reel whilst we eat dinner so if you don't fancy talking but have some interesting pictures to share then please send these to Andy Potter - email@example.com.
The location of this year's Chairman's walk and meal is being kept underwraps until nearer the time as is traditional. But you can save the date in your diary now so you can be sure to join us. All will be revealed when bookings open in the autumn.
