This event is in the past.
This is not your mother’s book club. We’ve taken the traditional book club and kicked it up a notch to satisfy our writerly curiousities. We’ll be looking under the hood of another great book, picked out by our members at the meeting before. (I’ll announce the book we’ll be reading, very, very soon.) We’ll try to figure out what the author did that made the book so engaging and what techniques and strategies we can use in our own writing.
I’ll be leading the discussion, putting all those expensive literary theory classes to good use. Oh, wait, not really, because I don’t care about structuralism or doing a close reading of the text, nor will be deconstructing signs and signifiers. Unless that’s your thing. I’ll be drawing on my skills as a writing coach and editor to help you figure out what works, what doesn’t and what resonates with you.
I'd like us to talk about the humor in the book, using blogs to launch our careers, truth in memoir and so on.
Here's a couple of good articles to get us started:
About me: I have an MFA in Creative Writing and an MA in United States History. Besides being overly degreed, I have practical experience helping writers bring their writing into the world. My clients have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, won a Glyph, won a CIPA EVVY, been a Tin House Literary Pick and have placed for the past several years in both the Colorado Gold and Zebulon Contests, among other honors.
The Writing Book Club is sponsored by the Boulder Book Store but to receive handouts I ask that you register for the class. Thanks and see you there!
