As you may know if you have had courts booked at the Medway Park this week the lights on courts 1 & 3 are not working. Apparently an electrician is attending tomorrow Wednesday 1st August in the hope of getting them up and running again. We all know how long it took to get court 2 sorted out so don't hold your breath. If they are not fixed before the weekend Club night will need to be cancelled although court 2 will be left booked assuming the lights carry on working on that court. Will let everyone know in the next couple of days.

The long awaited final of the 2017 Ankermill Handicap competition was played at the Medway Park on Friday 27th July 2018 between John Watts & Stephen Reeves.
John works away a lot so it was arranged at short notice. Spectators were in short supply - exactly zero!
It was always going to be difficult for Stephen as John started 2017 on a very good handicap but Stephen is clearly one of the most improved players now (in box league 1). In the final the maximum points that a player can start on is 16 in each game.
Stephen was hoping to get off to a good start. He got that and more in the first game.
John served first but Stephen won the first point and then proceeded to win the next 17 with some excellent angled shots. John did win a couple of points but lost 19 - 21.
In the second game Stephen stuck to his power game and and with John only winning one point ran out to win 21 - 17.
If John didn't think the pressure was on him at the start he certainly did now.
John had been playing well but really got stuck in in the third game. After some really good rallies he quickly got the 5 points he needed and won the game 21 - 6.
Both players knew the fourth game was going to be crucial and Stephen won the first 3 points. It only needed for John to get a few good shots over the line but they were going just below and he soon found himself 19 - 18 down. He pulled it back to 19 each but Stephen finally won 21 - 19 and the match 3 -1.
The match was played in a really good spirit by both players. A credit to the standard of squash within the Club.
For all those interested the World Junior Squash Championships began today in Chennai, India. They are running till the 29th July, below is a link for the tournament where live streams and catch up streams can be found of the days play.
Just a quick heads up that the new leagues are now up on the website, I have extended the league period to run from the 17th July to the 26th August so all you eager squashers have no excuse to not play your league games over the summer holiday period!
I will put a hard copy up on the notice board at Medway Park over the next few days.
Its is with regret that due to the England World Cup Semi Final match being played at 7pm on Wednesday it has been decided to postpone Club Night. Apologies for any inconveniance caused but Thursday (12th) will run as normal. There is a home Kent League match on Tuesday (10th) but the courts will be free from 6.30 - 7.30 for normal members reducing down to one court at 7.30.

The club had two members playing at the 2018 Rodmersham Open this year with Jake Tossell in the B Grade and Sam Millet competing in both the A and B Grades. Jake and Sam met in the quarterfinals of the B grade with Sam running out a 2-0 winner 11-4, 11-9. Sam went all the way to the final but lost a tight match 2-1 to Matt Witt. Jake went on to finish a respectable 7th.
In the A Grade Sam was unfortunately drawn against the number one seeded and eventual A grade winner Ted Jeal and ended up losing 11-0, 11-4. Sam went on to win one more match and came in 7th in a scarily strong field.
Due to Sam's heroic efforts in the top two grades he was rightly awarded the title of Player of the Tournament.
Welcome to the new Black Lion Website which I'll hope you'll all find helpful, informative and a little bit more functional than the old one. You'll notice that there are still the familiar tabs such as the Box Leagues, Members, Coaching etc but there are a few new things that should help improve communication within the club as well as allowing you a better overview of what's happening and taking place. For example the Events tab gives an overview of dates within the diary where clubs nights, coaching sessions as well as Kent League fixtures will be played. The site also allows members to upload pictures and albums. To help us make Black Lion the club that you want it to be, there is also a Forum page and I encourage members to use this to let us know your thoughts and to get some fun conversations on the go.
Well thats enough waffling from me. Hope you find it useful and see you at Club Nights!!!
