The coaches would like to encourage all paddlers to take one of the BCU's nationally-recognised performance awards. There are two award schemes, each with a series of progression levels. The Star Awards are for adults and older juniors, while the PaddlePower scheme has been designed for younger juniors. Please speak to your coach to discuss which scheme and which level is appropriate for you. One- and Two-Star are generic awards, encouraging paddlers to experience the various disciplines of Paddlesport available, with the emphasis on developing personal skills and gaining independence. One-Star can be taken in any boat (including a racing kayak). For Two-Star, the skills have to be demonstrated in both kayak and open canoe. To find out more, download the One-Star syllabus and the Two-Star syllabus. Coach Ant will be holding a training session on Saturday 28th July - please see Ant to reserve a place. The test itself will follow on the next mutually convenient date.
PaddlePower also has several levels, beginning with Start, then Passport (roughly equivalent to 1-Star), and Discover (roughly equivalent to 2-Star). The Start certificate can be issued directly by the coach. For each of the next stages, paddlers purchase a record card from the club (£5 each) on which the coach records their progress. When the card has been completed, it is sent off to the BCU who issue the certificate. Lightnings, please speak to coach Jacque to establish which card you need.
