This event is in the past.
We are pleased to announce another evening of Albanian poetry with the author/diplomat Robert Wilton, devoted to the 1930s poet Migjeni. This will include a talk under the title: "Songs of Noble Pain: the life and work of Migjeni", together with reciting of Robert's own translations.
Migjeni is considered an important figure in the Albanian poetry of the inter-war period of the 20th century. He is still much loved by Albanians, young and old. His poems resonate with the misery and suffering he saw around him, including his own - he died of TB in 1938 aged just 26. His work however can be said to have paved the way for modern literature in Albania.
Robert Wilton is already well known to us having given the Association two talks/recitals of Albanian poetry in 2014, and a subsequent appearance at King's Place. He has lived and worked in Kosovo and Albania for more than a decade. He was adviser to the Prime Minister of Kosovo in the lead-up to the country's independence, and is now Acting Head of the OSCE mission in Albania. He is co-founder of The Ideas Partnership charity, empowering marginalized communities and helping them get their children into school. He is the prize-winning author of the Comptrollerate-General series of historical novels, and a regular writer on the history of the Balkans and of international intervention. He also translates Albanian poetry...
Please let us know whether you will attend. The talk will be followed by refreshments. Attendees will be invited to make voluntary contributions to help cover costs.
