Vicky Rose started only cycling earlier this year, and intends to ride her first century ride on 4th August this year. There is a moving story behind this motivation that is enough to inspire and captivate anyone. Read on for her story...

In 2011 my friends Beth’s cousin Alex had died at the age of just 21 from Bone cancer. I had been thinking of Alex a lot since then, making a note to regularly check the BCRT website to see if there were any fundraising initiatives I could get involved with. There on the front page ‘Cycle for team bones’ - 100 miles. In a moment of madness I clicked ‘apply now’, that was it, I was in! Reality hit a couple of moments later when I realised that my trusty steed (a solid steel Raleigh called Sven with no gears) probably wasn’t going to get me round and the furthest I’ve ever gone was my 8 mile commute to work, nothing like the course which includes the notorious Box hill....

I phoned my friend Jared, a serious road biker and he prescribed a new bike, clippy pedals, training plans and most worrying of all - Lycra. I tackled the bike first buying a specialised Ladies dolce who was christened Edna on account of her purple handlebar tape. The training plan and Lycra came next along with my induction to the freewheeling clan (who have all been amazing) and then finally the clippy pedals.

The ride looms, now only a few weeks away, still after all this training I’m not sure I can do it, but I’m determined to give it my everything.  Alex was an amazing guy, all the money raised will be added to the total raised in his name and used to fund further research and care for bone cancer patients. All of us fundraising in memory of Alex, hope that by raising this money the outcome for other suffers will be improved, and that we can make a difference.

You can watch the moving short film of Alex and his family on YouTube here, parts of it are desperately sad but it’s very life affirming at the same time and shows how brave & brilliant he was:

As for the cycling as feared it seems I’m hooked, all I need to do now is cross that finish line on August the 4th
