December Hiking at South Fortuna Mountain, Mission Trails Regional Park

Coming in at 6 miles round trip, the trailhead for South Fortuna picks up in the Jackson Drive overflow parking lot, right before the main entrance to Mission Trails Regional Park. Alternately, you can also park in the Visitor Center’s parking lot and walk the extra quarter mile along the Visitor Loop Trail (which picks up near the base of the driveway) to the Jackson Drive overflow parking lot. The trail starts on a dirt path and takes you through shrubs and chaparral. At 0.85 miles, you may hear the sound of the San Diego River, although with the recent drought it isn’t as lively as it once used to be.
