2014 Conference Follow Up and Info

  • Thank you again to all of you that attended the 2014 State Planning Conference. The event was a rousing success and it continues to show how the planning professionals of Alaska are the best!  Below you will find information that I mentioned during the conference and the promised follow-up information for you review and action.

    1) Planning and Public Health Connection

    Update from National: At the Chapter's annual meeting on Tuesday night I mentioned that the American Planning Association (APA) is receiving year-one funding totaling $2.9 million from a grant provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help communities improve overall health and prevent chronic disease.

    Seventy-five percent of the funding will support local and state coalitions working to advance public health through more innovative planning and partnerships. Remaining funds will be used to provide assistance and training for local planning and public health initiatives. The grants will support community efforts to increase opportunities for physical activity, improve access to nutritious food, decrease exposure and consumption of tobacco, and increase access to health care.

    The project will be implemented in partnership with the American Public Health Association (APHA) and represents a major new collaboration between planners and public health professionals.

    APPLY NOW - Grants for Planning & Public Health Projects:  The  Healthy Planning Coalitions RFP (avaliable under the "files" tab) outlines the requirements for American Planning Association (APA) Chapters and American Public Health Association (APHA) Affiliates to develop collaborative projects.  Funds will be competitively awarded to build local capacity in communities across the U.S.  This project is designed to leverage our roles as collaborators and conveners to improve health outcomes. Through an overarching collaborative strategy that brings together members of the APA and the APHA, this project aims to build local capacity to address population heath goals and promote the inclusion of health in non-traditional sectors.

    Coalitions made up of APA chapter, APHA affiliate groups, and others will work to set a new paradigm for healthy planning. By leveraging complementary expertise and influence, this project seeks to expand innovative tactics to addressing tough problems.

    2) We Want You!

    As a way to continue to support our membership, in addition to the conference, in 2015 the chapter will be focusing on two initiative committees and exploring the possibility of an in-state CPAT program.  It is the hope of the board that by offering the committees and CPAT efforts we can start to expand our support  to members through advocacy, public education, mentorship, best practices, public service, and the general betterment of the planning profession.   Each of these topics provide opportunities for members to get involved.  Maybe being on the chapter board isn't your thing but you'd still like to help, get involved and give back, and volunteer here:

    AKAPA 2014 Initiatives Committees:  Established at the 2013 annual meeting, the chapter continues to support two initiative, resiliency and housing.  Both of these committees gave brief updates at the annual meeting.  As we reach the start of the new year, both groups will be setting goals for their work in 2015.  Now is a great time to get involved with these efforts.     In-State CPAT (Community Planning Assistance Team) Committee: CPATS are done at a national level by gathering a team of planners from around the country to do pro bono work on a particular community problem.  This same idea can be applied in-state and on varying scales.  The board would like to form a committee to explore how we could do this in-state and identify a pilot project. Erin Reindeer of Unalaska is the chapter's Rural Region Vice President and will be this committee's chair.  Erin is a great person to help lead this effort as Unalaska has recently participated in a national CPAT.  If you would like to get involved with this committee please contact Erin.

    3) Bylaw Amendments - Coming Soon

    Be prepared to see and vote on updated bylaws coming your way in the month of December. The board went over a draft this last weekend and will be getting it finalized very soon.  The Bylaw amendments include an updated schedule for our chapter elections as we need to come in line with the new nation APA election cycle.  The general content of the bylaws won't be dramatically different but the look will be, it was time to give the bylaws a new layout for easier use and do some general clean up of the overall document.

    Voting Reminder: We use the most current list of e-mail addresses from APA National. If you have a new e-mail address or will please make sure you login to Planning.org ASAP and update your contact information via the MyAPA page.  The ballot for the bylaw amendments will be sent out digitally.
