Oxford Alumni Speaker - Chris Brown (co-hosted by 85Broads and Oxford Union)

Posted by Ekaterina, Tuesday 13th November @ 1:46pm

The Oxford chapter of 85 Broads, a global women’s networking group, is happy to announce another alumni speaker event in collaboration with the Oxford Union. Please join us for an exciting evening speaking to one of Oxford’s successful women grads as she gives her insight into a career in IT and how Oxford has influenced her life and career paths. Our termly alumni speaker event looks at women in various industries and how Oxford helped them get where they are today. They were once faced with the same choices we are today and have moved past tutes into the “real world”. Come and find out how at this discussion where you’ll have plenty of time to ask your own questions. Get to know more about the possibilities our network offers by logging onto www.85broads.com.

This term’s speaker: Chris Brown
Chris Brown graduated from Jesus College in 1982 with a degree in English Language and Literature. Now a freelance IT consultant, Chris fell into the IT industry by accident and has worked in it for the last 25 years, during which time she has gained broad experience of the impact of technology in the retail, telecommunications and financial services sectors. She spent eight years in senior management roles followed by appointment as CIO in 1998, at BT Cellnet. There she gained first hand experience of the impact of the explosive growth of consumer mobile communications in the UK, rapid product to market timescales and the launch of mobile data services. She was also part of the management team that successfully demerged the firm from British Telecom to become O2. She has subsequently spent three years as European CIO for Marsh with responsibility for IT in over 40 countries, bringing technology innovation to a ‘paper driven’ business model. Here she also was an active participant in management leadership and mentoring programmes. Chris is an active member of the UK e-skills business advisory board that is helping to restructure the technology curriculum for 14-19 year olds to ensure a better match between education and the needs of UK business. She was a finalist in the Blackberry UK ‘Women in Technology Awards’ in 2005.

PROGRAMME INFORMATION and INVITATION:

It is our pleasure to introduce you to BROAD ADVANTAGE, a one-week "immersion in business" for undergraduate university women. We believe young women get trapped in their choices through inexperience, and aim to give them a phenomenal start, by providing both the intel and interpersonal tools needed to succeed post-university.

The program is built on the wealth of expertise within our exclusive global network of 17,000 high flyers representing virtually every life and career path: entrepreneurs, filmmakers, authors, scholars, philanthropists, mothers.

June and August will see programmes in New York and Los Angeles, with up to 120 exceptional young women selected through competitive applications for each weak-long session.

Right now, these are only available in the US, but our European network is strong and can offer this opportunity to UK undergraduates!

Check out the feedback below and get in touch to support having our very own LONDON version of the programme.

      • Do email us back with your name and university
to register EXPRESSION OF INTEREST ASAP * * *

All feedback on the provisional programme is very welcome (this can be found at www.broadadvantage.com)

CLASS OF '06:
"I do strongly believe is that the Broad Advantage program changed the direction of my life…I learned the value of 'healthy competition'
before that week, coming from Oxford, I would have scoffed at putting either of those words in the same sentence…Every girl I met on the trip, and every speaker, I really hope will be a good friend and business associate for life"
Name: Megan From: University of Oxford '07 Major: English

"Thank you so much for this absolutely transforming experience! It has opened my eyes and inspired me to pursue my dreams and not be hesitant to take an unconventional path. This program has helped me to learn a great deal about the world I am about to enter—the business world. But more importantly, it has helped me to learn more about myself"
Name: Kseniya From: Barnard College '09 Major: Political Science / Economy

"I learned a lot about myself at the Broad Advantage. I also met someone from Federated during the program. I asked if I could pass on my resume, and she said, "I'd be happy to take your resume and pass it along. I'd be happy to offer my advice." About a month and a half later, I was invited to attend Federated's product development training program, which is a year long training program that exposes product assistants like me to all aspects of the business. Now I deal with everything from trademark infringement to marketing of our product"
